DayZ + Arma Lag/Stutter?

Recommended Posts

I have the required system specs to play Arma 2, Arma 2 OA, and DayZ and I used to run the game fine. For Months now I have been looking for a fix and all the posted topics on every forum I have tried have not worked so I have come here to look for a solution. Basically, the game runs at about 30-50 FPS fine, for about 3 seconds then I get 3 seconds of Lag/Stutter where the game gets a bit choppy. This is in SP and MP, on DayZ and many other addons. I have tried turning vsync + triple buffering on, nothing. Tried turning vsync off, nothing. I have tried everything and It just won't stop the most annoying stutter ever!

System specs:

Processor: Intel Core i5

GPU: Nvidia Geforce GT525m

640GB Hard drive

I can post a video of if needed.

If it's not low FPS issues but actual stuttering then I had exactly the same issue (ish) a few months ago.

I'd have smooth fps but then every 5 seconds or so it would stutter (or freeze for a few milliseconds) and then continue.  It made the game unplayable for me.

I'm not sure which of these things fixed it but I resolved it by:

-Opening my rig and cleaning it with compressed air - that ruled out overheating being an issue.

-Defragging my HD

-Performing a disk-cleanup to remove all of the unnecessary stuff

It's basic maintenence really but if you haven't done any of those 3 things for a few months I highly recommend it and it worked for me.  Now I'm far from the most tech-savvy guy here so somebody else will hopefully be more specific about the issue but in the meantime I really would consider doing the above.

I defragged not so long ago, should I then use CCleaner and run the checkups and stuff?

It could be possible that your gpu or cpu is throttling due to overheating, so it slows down alot to get the temperature lower. use msi afterburner and some cpu temperature tool to check it out, on My laptop it used to throttle too so i cleaned up the fan/inside and it stopped doing that.

Yeh, it always helps but as the guy above said, my hunch is that it's overheating so I'd do that first.  It's really easy to sort out, can be done in 5 mins.

Fraggle: could you try to join a vanilla DayZ server with a regular mission file (less than 50 kb ), and tell me if you experience the same 5 second lag?

Sorry mate, I don't even have Arma2 installed atm :/.

This does sound exactly the same as the issue I had around 6 months ago though and there were no patches in the time I got it sorted.  PM me if you want me to get someone else to hop on though.

If it helps the OP has a different CPU and GFX manufacturer to me.  Soz I can't be more useful right now.

OP - Here's a link to MSI Afterburner:  http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm .  Run that and check your cpu temps although it's not 100% accurate it will highlight any obvious issues.

I don't think that this problem is hardware related.

Oh......

Well if you need a tester with a specific set-up I can try and find one for you.  Not sure if I'll have much luck but I can try....

I can just make a quick request on the forums and you'll get loads of feedback within an hour or so.

About this 5 second lag, there is a performance issue with big mission files or modified client files.

That's why I ask some details on your bad DayZ experience.

I don't need further testing for now, but thanks for asking ;)

Can one of you give me the IP to a server that has a small mission file so I can try?

And What do I do in MSI Afterburner, what am i supposed to look for or do?

While I'll agree this can be an issue, it would affect everyone that joins that server to some extent. Playing arma offline or joining a different Dayz server would correct the problem.

I vote for hardware or software issue. I've experienced stuttering, jerky moments on and off constantly when I OC'd my processor beyond my cooling abilities. A friend had the same issues with an old 9800GT card that was overheating. Another friend of ours had very similar issues due to something running in the background causing his bandwith to max out for a second at a time at certain intervals and yet another had a serious memory leak going on in windows that caused major stuttering.

Afterburner monitors temps I believe. I use software specifically made for the hardware I have.

Small mission file? Any public hive dayz server will do.
