Korsbaek 1778 Posted August 29, 2013 You have a lot of great ideas, and this is definetely one of the better ones. BeanZ
h3l1x 327 Posted August 29, 2013 Mod already have nails as loot. Crafting is going to be implemented on next patch. So why go with tactical gear and not plain diy traps? 1) Throw nails in the middle of the road. 5-10% chance to deflate tires.2) Wooden plank + nails = plank with upside nails. Throw it in the middle of the road. 50-60% chance to deflate tires. Also said traps would be destroyed after being run over by one vehicle for balancing reasons.
mzltv 2281 Posted August 29, 2013 Definitely an idea worth entertaining. Could make for some fun ghillie/banditry moments.
-Se7eN- 874 Posted August 29, 2013 Could even do it now before crafting if you dont mind it looking abit scruffy. Make a new item "spike_strip"put its model as the wirefence. and when its deployed set it to be a few ft under ground so all you can see is some of the razor wire sticking out of the ground.

Skat3rat 1633 Posted August 29, 2013 I like the idea. You could use razors and nails as spikes. Like h3llx said, they are adding crafting in the next update so you could easily craft spikes. I think it would work really well in DayZ.
enforcer1975 1111 Posted August 29, 2013 I don't think they use that kind of stuff in ex Russia :D AK is a universal tool  So what happens if you have stopped the car....find a replacement for the tires because it think there will not be that much lying around if spikes or similar are craftable. h3l1x 327 Posted August 30, 2013 I just want to add that balancing this feature is very important. Expect as soon as something like this gets implemented everyone on every single server placing traps on every road they come across and camping there till a vehicle comes. And this is the reason I don't like the idea of using barbed wire or tactical "chains" with spikes like KoS suggested. These things would cover the entire width of the road, thus not giving the chance to the driver to spot them and try an evading maneuver. The only way to avoid said traps would be to drive off the road. Just take into consideration that fully repairing a vehicle (especially by one person and not a team) takes several hours and trips around the map. So I believe taking out tires should be an option, but not an easy task. And it should not have a guaranteed result, eg "I'm placing a trap here and I'm sure any vehicle that comes along will get flat tires". There should always be a failchance. By using planks you ensure that a player can't cover the entire width of the road with just one item. Let's say it takes 4 planks to do that. And that each plank takes up 4 slots and when combined with nails it takes up ever more, say 5. So even with an emtpy inventory one can only carry 2 planks with nails simultaneously. And give them the same properties/behavior as rifles when it comes to backpacks. So one can't carry easily a bunch of them at the same time. Make planks kinda rare or maybe only found in barns, reduce the ammount of nails, and there you go, it seems balanced.

Or duct tape to turn them into little throwable spikes.
AP_Norris 1018 Posted August 30, 2013 I wanna get this and stick it on the road leading into my heavily fortified base. Then the car should go about walking speed so they can't escape but rather have to pull over and pay some stuff for new tyres hidden away in the depths of my fort.Great scam! h3l1x 327 Posted August 30, 2013 You'd also need tools like a hammer to drive the nails into the plank. Or duct tape to turn them into little throwable spikes. I thought about that too, the hammer part, but there are problems with it. For starters, all the tool slots in the mod are used, so adding another tool, eg hammer would mean removing an existing one and you can't since all are useful. So no tool slot for hammer. Also, we already have a toolbox which obviously has a hammer inside since it's one of the most used tools. And don't forget that a hammer can be substituted easily with a flat rock, or a brick, or anything solid and heavy. Maybe we should start thinking ways of adding more tool slots in the mod. enforcer1975 1111 Posted August 30, 2013 Hammer is in a toolbox but i would just use the grip of a pistol...just don't forget to unload it first

Well, yeah. I thought a toolbox item seemed obvious? I'm just saying realistically you'd need a hammer, which would be in a toolbox. Hammer is in a toolbox but i would just use the grip of a pistol...just don't forget to unload it first  Really? I have a feeling you overestimate the durability of a pistol frame. You'd be better off just picking up a stone off the ground. Edited August 30, 2013 by SalamanderAnder
Karmaterror 982 Posted August 30, 2013 I love this idea, but i do agree a spikestrip sould be hard to make. maybe having the hammer as a seprate tool could be good....forcing players to decide which tools they need to take with them for the mission they are going on. we shouldnt have enough toolbelt slots to carry every single tool we could ever need....smoe should have to be stashed away and brought out when needed.
