Water sources?

Hey guys, I'm new to this game. Just started playing yesterday in fact, but I've followed the game for a long time. I just got tired of waiting for standalone so I bought Arma 2 : Combined Ops and installed DayZ. I've been doing fairly well, despite a few rookie mistakes here and there and trusting someone who called out as 'friendly', only to shoot me in the head right after I gave him a coke.

 

Anyway, my question is, once you find a canteen and drink from it, where exactly can I refill the water? I don't recall coming across any sources of water that looked remotely healthy to drink. I've seen legends on the maps that indicate Wells and what have you, but I haven't seen any wells in the cities. Maybe I am just overlooking it, but any help would be appreciated.

Most small towns have wells, and you can refill at ponds

For some reason, the wells don't allow you to refill water. I know for a start that Kamenka has a water pump. Komorovo does too I believe.

Ponds are extremely common, and occasionally marked on the map.

Lakes/ponds, pump wells and covered wells can collect water from, no mater what you need to boil them (all you need is a tin can and fire (firebarrel or campfire)) The map mentioned above has most of the wells and pumps on them as well as lakes and ponds.  Seawater is the only place you cant drink from.

Ok awesome, thanks for the tips. My follow up question to that would be, is the only way to start a fire with a pile of wood and a box of matches? Because matches seem to be pretty rare to me as I have only found one so far and it was in a bandit's pack that I just killed.

It's more risky but if you find oil barrels in town or tire piles, they can be set on fire without matches, just have to use the menu to do so and you can cook on them.

Also you should boil water to avoid infection.

Yes, the only way to start a fire is with matches.  Try checking grocery stores for matches.  They usually have some.

The two story pub as well as the red house with the arched doorway are both good sources for matches as well.

Cherno Store, outside the front entrance near some sandbags.

Cherno Medical Tents, in the same yard as Triage center, southern side (across the street form the hospital).

Cherno Docks Church, right outside the door.

Cherno International Hotel, a few scattered about on the streets

Berezino South Store, right outside the front door.

Berezino Military tents, couple scattered about on the football/socer field.

Only one I know of is in the Balota Medical Tents area.

Deer Stands can spawn matches. In fact the percentage is higher than a Grocery Store but the issue is that you have fewer spawn points per deer stand, then again there are fewer zombies around them and more deer stands.
