Are there zombies with special abilities?

I'm still pretty much a noob at DayZ with about 10-12 hrs in the game.  I have figured out how to escape zombies by running through buildings or hiding in pine trees.  I'm also getting pretty good at "sneaking" to avoid detection.  So I was getting pretty confident in my abilities running through the woods just north of the dam/powerplant.  I had just found a refillable bottle and was happy to see a water source at the bottom of the hill.  Across the map (very far away from me) was a zombie running.  Since I was standing still, I figured that there was no way I had aggro'd him.  THis SOB ran about 500 straight at me and chased me, so I went to the nearest pine tree (a big one).  The tree however, did NOT protect me (for the first time ever).  He hit me and I was down in ONE HIT (I had full blood/health).  I was down for about 15 sec then I was able to shoot him from prone.  After he was dead I was infected and had lost my sense of hearing. I died of the infection, since I had no antibiotics.

 

So, it seems to me that this zombie was "special":

1. He saw me from across the map and started pursuit

2. He was the only zombie I've ever seen that could penetrate the pine tree

3. He was the only zombie I've ever seen that could knock me down in one hit

4.  After I was down he kept coming at me/hitting/etc and would not leave (other times I've been knocked down they lose interest

 

I sucked dying like this, because I had just found my first automatic rifle and I had a huge backpack to also keep my axe.  It was the best equipment accumulation I"ve had so far.  However, it was also awesome to get attacked like this, because it scared the crap out of me and now I'm way less casual/confident, which makes the game more scary = more fun.

 

Sorry about the long post....question is:  are there special zombies with more powerful abilities, or was he just a regular zombie and I'm an idiot?

As far as i know you cant die from infection, it drops you to 2000 blood but not further (thats how it once was anyway)

 

I think they modded that bloodsucker zombie in on origins that might do that to you but idk.

You can die by infection in 1.7.7.

 

There are no special zombies in the official DayZ mod, although I think some have been added in the unofficial mods of DayZ (e.g. bloodsuckers in Namalsk).

 

Being knocked down is random, every time you get hit there's a chance you could be knocked down. There's a higher chance if you get hit in the back. Hiding in pine trees isn't very reliable any more, your best bet these days is luring them in to a building then either killing them or escaping or just running and trying to use trees etc. to break line of sight for long enough for them to lose interest.

As said, don't rely on tree's to vex them anymore. If you can't lose them it's better to lure them into an open area, backwards jog and shoot them from the hip as they follow... even better if you can use the axe. when they stop to attack, just step back out of range and hit them. It's quite reliable when you get the timing right.

I have died from infection...well, not the infection per say but from leaping off a roof when I realized I wasn't going to make it.

Have never been knocked down by a single blow.

I have been attacked through walls, the 2 room log cabin with the narrow doorway (death trap) and the long brown sided barn and a few times they attacked around corners on the catwalk in the warehouse.

Only one Zed has penetrated the pine tree trick.

I have had them come running from over 100 meters which is unsettling and twice now in the tents at Stay Sabor I've had a prone zombie that I shot in the head three times, he played dead and grabbed me as I entered the tent...sucked

My least favorites are those that don't go agro and attack from your blind side without making a sound

I consider most of that to be unfortunate glitches and just the price we pay for playing this game.

Other then infected zombies, which have a higher chance to give you an infection and deal a little more damage, there are no 'specialized' zombies.  Most of the stuff that happened is either a bug/glitch, or just bad luck/rng on your part.

I think you just had the rare instance of a extremely bad odds and perhaps a little bit of a bug. Occasionally for me too I have random zombies aggro much farther than they usually do. Some pine trees don't provide 100% protection from every direction either (I don't know why). You probably got a bad zombie 'roll' on their attack damage that hit. I think everyone has been 1 hit K/O'ed by a zombie once in their career.

There are viral zombies which have a high chance of infecting you, they can be identified by blood splatters on their shirt and face, I don't know if they do increased damage but it seems to me they do, I've been one-kit KO'ed by them several times and they seem to take 1/4 of my blood with a single hit sometimes.

The amount of damage they cause depends on where they hit you + Type of zombie + a random factor.
