Ballistic vest/chest rig idea for standalone.

Recommended Posts

Well...trying to get the thread BTT...running around with a heavy body armor, even with "normal" body armor add a large burden. How many people wearing body armor except military and police have you seen in zombie movies/series even the military guys in "Falling Skies" didn't and they have like a insurgency type world war going on...i mean those people have to run really fast. And normally in a zombie apocalypse beeing in a gunfight won't happen as much as beeing hunted by whatever "lurks the dark" afterwards. Most of the time it's the weapons and they show no interest in body armor.

Bulletproof vests would be a nice addition. Me myself am in the Finnish Defence Forces serving my conscription duty and we have these kinds of vests that stop 9mm rounds to the neck, shoulders and groin and armor plates on the chest and back that stops most common FMJ rifle rounds(5.56/7.62). This picture isn't the exact model I have, but almost.

EDIT: Oh, and it only weighs around 20 kg so it's nice to run with :D

LOL "only" If the threat is high enough you would even wear a 50kg armored suit. But we are talking DayZ here, it's not the military running around in the afghan highland trying to smoke out some extremists who don't have anything better to do that shoot soldiers with AP bullets and mortar shells every 10 minutes. You will even get to the weight but the avatars in DayZ are not your highly trained space marines but your average John and Jane Doe who would have enough problems carrying a backpack and weapons. I hope the game doesn't end with everyone wearing thermoptic camo, a class XXX armor suit and helmet. If so i can play ArmA 3 instead...

how about dragon skin?

Prototype state, most regular US weapons, even civilian versions of the Armalite system and equipment don't even get exported due to security reasons/weapon regulations. Otherwise we wouldn't have Oberland Arms in Germany if you wanted an Armalite system ( OA-15 ) for whatever reason...i've read even a german competition shooter had a tough time to get one of these. Guess what they will do if you wanted a .50 sniper...

By pseudo I mean lots of things. *wink*

Anyway: Interesting. I'd like to have the peace of mind that home base is guarded by real military, but I guess overseas does have a lot more to deal with; not as many drunk first years in the states causing a ruckus. You know how many people lost their jobs in car accidents in the 2 weeks I spent in Fort Irwin in California? 6. One guy lost a leg and an arm on his motorcycle in his first week after bootcamp. >.> The Mojave is a great place though.

I would rather have the Military guarding bases too. But yeah back to the topic. I think if they added plate carrier and plates separately and made plates very rare that would be cool.

It'd be the kind of thing you'd leave in your car until you knew there was trouble coming up.

Yeah. Or if you were a civvie probably would be in your house. And if you had a plate carrier with plates you probably would have (at the very least) a bug-out bag.

Body armors are another one of these things you would have literally no chance to find if the shit hit the fan.

Why?

Because while guns are still good shot after shot, armors take the hit for you and each shot greatly reduce it's effectiveness.

Plate carriers? really? This isn't a 2 day patrol, would you realistically carry armor plates while hiking through the wilderness for several months?

I think the addition of vests/plates would be nice but make them rare and damageable... prisons, police stations, maybe a very select handful of houses in the entire map... the guy who finds them would have a real treasure if he found the plates, if not, he has a standard tactical vest that could carry a couple more things. Simple and easy.

I don't know how much knowledge you have about plate carriers, but I would personally like to have one if crap hit the fan. You can store a lot of stuff in them. You don't even need the plates for them to be useful. There's one plate carrier you can buy (don't remember what it is) that carries like 6 or 7 STANAG mags without adding any pouches onto the Molle. http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Enhanced-Commando-Recon-Harness,756,83.htm

Just for reference it's that one. Plus you can add Molle pouches to hold more handgun or rifle magazines, or pouches to hold other things.

As far as carrying them all the time, like has been previously stated the Military uses them all the time while operating. Including in Afghanistan where it gets very, very hot. But again we're talking about civvies here (the DayZ character you play).

When you KNOW there's going to be a fight, you stuff it in your car until you need it. Duh?

I was never big on chest rigs myself... they hold yah in the air when all yah want to do is wriggle into the ground. As far as "carriers" or webbing goes just the belt and harness stuff is best for grunt work, chest rigs are for drivers, and SF who have no intention of getting in a drawn out ground wrigglin fire fight. Ballistic vests could be a cool addition, obviously the weight does need to be considered, the one we used were around the 20kg, which is nothing on its own, but then yah rifle and webbing is another 25-30kg... and yah pack is another 30-40kgs. Its not practicle to carry a pack with body armor. One or the other.

Now i know the characters arnt elite military, but if they did not posses some extrodinary fitness and mental hardness, they would be zombies, its not that hard to carry 50-60kgs all day(youre not running anywhere mind), when its packed properly. A pack weighs more than a ballistic vest with ceramic plates, there should be no reason yah cant carry one or the other. The biggest issue i had with body armour, is it dosnt breath, yah get F$%kin hot, and go through a shit load o water. As is now, the characters dont carry bugger all, yah cant fit anything closely ressembling what you can carry irl in your inventory and pack (excluding carzy stuff like engine block wheels etc)

TacticalN29, you are exactly right... in real life, if shit hits the fan, IMO you want a carrier vest.

My personal rig has dual flashlight/knife/multi-tool pouches, a medical/emergency pouch, an 8" X 8" utility/ammo pouch, and a 6, 30 roound magazine pouch... without plates it is about 30 lbs give or take. My plates are roughly 7.5 lbs each... I can truck in this thing all day.

Also, Applejaxc brought up a fantastic point that I had forgot to mention. If you don't want to run around with the thing, or say you can only have a plate carrier vest OR a backpack, but not both... put it in your car, and say going into town you might get into a tangle, put the backpack in the car for the time being and throw the vest on.

I mean come on guys... post-apocolyptic zombie world doesn't need to leave us with only what we have... if we are smart enough to successfully utilize several types of equipment/gear. This may seem a little overkill or too complicated for some, but I know in real life... You'd see me with a hell of a lot more going on than just a big backpack, some beans, bandages, and a gun... And I think it would be cool to incorporate that style into the game. To each their own...

It would be cool if they had different play styles. People who preferred large backpacks or people who preferred plate carriers etc. An interesting point is that plate carrier I linked earlier (I think it was that one) doesn't have a back piece. So you really could carry a backpack with it on.

I think it's already enough people can survive being shot with a DMR in the chest. Pistols already do very low damage to players and I don't think it would be too great if you could make them even more ineffective.

Yes, my opinion is that in diffrent locations like military buildings or barracks you find diffrent types of vest as like they did in normal Dayz with items, as a example your not going to find a Military ballastic vest in a apartment complex or in the middle of the forest

Well I am hoping for a little different damage system in the standalone vs the mod. Rocket obviously has talked about some changes already so who knows what we might actually see when it comes out. If they make taking the shot to the chest more deadly, one shot kills to vital areas of the body, and bleed out and broken bones to limb shots and such, the damage system would be more accurate (more fun IMO), and having a vest WITH the rare plate(s) more valuable, while throwing another twist into into gameplay.
