Zombies are just too bad...

I'm really hesitant to make this my first thread, but I just gotta say something. I feel like the zombie animations and just the overall feel of the zombies are so bad that I just can't even play this game. I know it is more about survival and stuff, but nothing in the world takes me out of the feel of tension and suspense and really being there that this game gives you more quickly than the zombies. Every...single...time I see one of them move I just sorta hang my head in disgust and can't even bring myself to want to fight them. I know this is a weird analogy but it's almost the same feeling I get when I try to watch Episode 1 of Star Wars and every time Jar Jar Binks comes on the screen it just becomes unwatchable, does anyone else get that?

Does anyone else feel like the zombies are literally too bad to ignore and just can't even get into the game because of them? Does anyone know if this kinda thing is going to be fixed in the standalone?

How do you guys look past the terribleness of the zombies to actually get into the game itself?

edit: The last question is really the most important part, I'm struggling to get into the game because of the zombies alone. Everything else about the game I'm really into. The suspense, the feeling of not knowing if someone is going to shoot you on sight, the fact that you can actually find weapons and ammo when you look for items, etc...

been said a million times before, it's one of the things they're working hardest on for the standalone. if you want good zombies go play killing floor or left 4 dead :D

This is huge, I'm REALLY glad to hear they are working on it for the standalone. Obviously they have to be aware of the problem but actually working to fix it is key. That makes me feel a lot better, thanks!

Yup anti hack and zombies and more explorable world is the 3 main things they are really working on in standalone, standalone should fix most of these problems.

the zombie where "hacked" in to the game so they are totally broken and it is imposable for the mod team to fix them

but they are fixing them for the SA (they will be around 50% done on release) but they have had to start from scratch, writing them in to the engine, fixing the path-finding (so them wont keep running WAY too fast) and optimizing them to stop lag, and giving them a new skeleton witch will help with optimization and animation

they will also be spawned sever side so there will be MORE of them

^ this. It also explains why the zombies zig-zag, they try to avoid bullets like the AI in arma 2

Dont get your hopes up. The will be improved, but nowhere near the quality of Left Four Dead zombies.

Leave the Zombies alone.. They should be feared, but put antibotics in the the darn med boxes at hospitals and heli crashes. Even if its only 1 or 2 antibotics.

AddictedFool, I know it can be frustrated. I think every update causes issues and what I find is you just have to forget the game you played and go more basic. Just kill the zeds, kiiiiiilllllll! *waves hatchet* :thumbsup:

Yep, the civilian AI is terrible. They drive over obvious mines and just don't give a fuck if there is shooting all around them.

Reading through this it gave me quite a neat idea.. Things like the ACE mod or ZuesAI mod improve AI in ArmA by quite a lot. I use both, not sure if it would of worked but one could dream how the Mod may have been with such things!

I can understand where the OP is coming from, especially being a "zombie purest" myself. But, it's just always been part of DayZ's "charm" and the general atmosphere of DayZ is bleak, grim and tense enough to sort of "make up" for it, to a point.

I don't think using L4D as comparison for "proper" zombies is right either, given that I'm wholly again the whole "running zombie thing", so it's semantics...

As for being "the infected", yeah, then comparing to L4D would be appropriate. But as has been said, the animations is one of the largest issues they're working on hard for the SA, so then at least movements will be more fluid and realistic, if not still a little too fast, though Dean mentioned something about adjusting zombie speed a little for the SA.

I don't think it's just about the zombies themselves, though; it's more just the fact that if any AI in any game moved like a zig-zagging, epileptic, karate chopping ninjas, it would break the immersion regardless of what game you were playing, lol.

I think when people talk about the AI, to a certain extent what they're actually talking about are the animations; which are undoubtedly better in L4D with it being a purpose built game and whatnot.

 

The AI isn't great. They'll constantly do dumb things like ignore you to start smashing a door, but I suppose that comes with the territory of being a zombie. :P

 

Expect a bit improvement in the standalone game.

sombies have any I? they run they hit they eat they eventually die..without zig zag it would just be easier headshotting them in the open..that's all.
