Shooting

Recommended Posts

I'm really bad at shooting, how could I shoot better?

Things I've tried:

- Practicing

- First person shooting

My smoothing is at 0 - is this smart?

ArmA II armory and editor. Just keep at it, try shooting with a large variety of weapons...Makarov to M240 to Mk19. Shoot at things from 2m away, and then at things from 200m away. Shoot at big things, shoot at small things. You'll get the hang of it soon enough.

You might want to try smoothing a bit more than 0. It's really a matter of taste. I dunno if Arma II has mouse acceleration but if so that is what you definetly want to set to 0 because it makes the mouse "oversteer" as in after you stop moving mouse the cursor keeps moving.

Other than that: Shoting is only precise in first person and in aim mode (right click). For long range shooting you definetly want to hold breath in addition to that (hold right mouse).

Yes, smoothing should be disabled, also make sure that post-process effects is disabled unless you're running on a NASA super-computer, it 'muddies' your mouse input and throws your aim off.

Like dulix said - the best way to improve your shooting is shooting. Play the ARMA II campaigns, play some Wasteland, play some Deathmatch, whatever you gotta do. Just keep shooting, lol.

Look for the singleplayer mission "the shooting range" on armaholic. It gives you a range with full control over target, distance, movement etc etc etc. You can try out just about every weapon in the game there, even the ones not in dayz. It also lets you put on "bullet camera" which follows the shot after it leaves your barrel.

That last bit really helps you understand what your round does during it's flight and gives you a better understanding of how your aim works.

Remember that each gun can have very different characteristics to the next, things like basic accuracy, recoil, bullet drop over distance and built in zeroing.

If you're not used to how each gun handles it can be a little confusing when you take perfect aim but the bullet lands too high or too low,

So just practise and really get to know how each gun works. especially the guns you dont like.

Or, just sneak behind people and hatchet them!

Shooting range is awsome, not only will you get good at judging distance after viewing diff targets at different ranges you will also get to know ur guns.

Also in shooters like a2 and mods like project reality its not always about the headshots. Dont get me wrong its what you should aspire to in the majority of fps's but at long ranges with an unscoped weapon you are better off aiming centre mass neck area. Remember the head is a very acute target at range and somtimes the situation will require a less risky percentage of hit on target.

Also think about the conitations of enviroment, never drag ur site at ur feet in any game, or you are walking up a stairwell you want to imagine where a target would be if they entered the stairwell from above you for example and adjust your sight acordingly.

Also the situation- you want to make the kill as hassle free as posible. For instance try and engage moving left to right targets as little as possible, always look whats around them such as possible loot where they might stop to give you an easy kill that makes less noise abd uses less ammo and gives you better opotunity to make a cleaner kill. Most weapons with scopes will lead lines left and right of the x hair, practice on the shooting range missions at making moving target shots as sometimes you wont have the luxuary of easy shots.

Hope this helps

And once you get the hang of it on the range, take it a step further by going on one of those nutty PvP "spawn with full gear maximum carsss!!" servers. They might not make any sense toward the rest of dayz but the provide you plenty of oppurtunity to practice against more dynamic targets than those on the range... And that shoot back.

That way you will get some experience fighting other players much faster than you ever would in a true-dayz environment.

So true. I play those servers as "combat training" for legit hive characters. I survive a lot more firefights now.

It sounds a bit silly, but I improved my aiming by playing on my console for a couple of days, aiming for nothing but headshots in State of Decay. In turn, I'm now a lot more accurate on DayZ.

I guess I just drilled it into my head over and over, and it worked.

What I'm trying to say is, practice. A lot.

When I first started I did not understand the games mechanics. One time I made a sprint up to a couple of guys healing themselves after a firefight with my buddy, I proceeded to hold down my AK and only wound one of them; then get murdered.

Take your time and practice, just like anything you want to learn in life.

Tweaking the mouse sensitivity to your preferred wrist comfort always helps.
