I think the hardest thing to do in DayZ...

Recommended Posts

Is to trust other players.

First things first: I'm a bandit. I kill other players for their gear. I sneak up behind oblivious survivors, shout "Guess who's dying today?!" and then shoot them in the back of the head. When I'm fully geared, I'll run to the coast and hold up recent spawns of the beans they got from Komarovo until someone comes by and snipes me.

However, what I don't do is lie to other players in order to kill them. When I say "I won't shoot you," I mean it. If I say I'll help someone, I'll show them around, protect them from zombies, and give them some food. If I'm in a building and someone tells me to drop my weapon and come out, I talk my way out of the situation instead of just shooting them. But I'm a bandit, so why should they take my word for it? There's no repercussions for shooting me. They won't lose humanity, and they'll get my gear. More often than not, they shoot me.

I joined a low-pop server and ran to Elektro to gear up. I run into an infected bandit looting the hospital and he shoots at me, but I tell him I'm unarmed and talk him down. He shoots me about five minutes later when I'm looting the west fire station. Oh well.

I spawn and run back to Elektro. I see a survivor running through a field and I hail him. Turns out he's showing his friend how to play DayZ (in his house probably, since there were no other survivors around), and he had just looted my corpse. We chat a little, run into the barn in the north and we fend off zombies. He then drops all of the stuff he looted from my body, bid me a good day, and logged off to watch a movie. Some faith in humanity restored.

Now regeared, I run into the church to lose some zombies so I can continue gearing up. I then hear "You in the church. Drop your weapon and come out." I talk him down and I come out with my AK-74 lowered. He had an MP5, and I could have easily won the exchange. We chat for a minute and then we agree to not shoot each other. I occasionally hear him talking to himself, but he explains that he has a friend on Skype he's also talking to.

While looting the supermarket, I see him run into the pub across the street. He blows two MP5 magazines on six zombies, and then comes in to the supermarket. He's out of ammo, so he asks to tag along with me. I allow this. I run around looting buildings and he follows me. He gets a shotgun from the west firestation, along with a couple pellets. We run to the station at the power plant, and he uses it all fending off zombies with me. He loots some slugs, but I tell him to save his ammo, and that I'll handle the zombies. I pull out my pistol...

And he starts shooting at me. He shoots me six times and hits half of them. I run to the stairs, pull out my AK-74, and pump him full of lead. Right before he dies, I hear him say to his Skype friend, "Hahaha, yeah I did. Shot him like eight times." I fall unconscious and bleed to death. Him sounding like he was fourteen should've been a red flag, but I didn't think of it at the time.

I spawn, run back to the fire station, loot and then hide both corpses. I guess I can count that as a victory since I came out with more stuff than before and he now has nothing, but the use of deceit left a bitter taste in my mouth. It is extremely hard to trust armed survivors, especially when you're a bandit and you have better gear than them. The friendly guy at the barn made me feel good and want to team up with others more, but the kid afterwards undid all of that and then some. I shot the next guy that came close to me, but I left most of his gear there and told him he could come back and get it.

I'm okay with being shot on sight, but when people call friendly and then shoot you, it makes you not trust others. As a result, you shoot others due to loss of trust, and in turn they start shooting others. Eventually, the word "friendly" will have no meaning, and saying it is just going to give your position away.

Bandits gonna bandit, but don't be a dick. If you call friendly, mean it.

Kinda reminds me how I saved 2 morons there other day who both fired a load of Enfield rounds and got trapped in the pub in cherno with no ammo

I threw smokes, killed the Zeds with my Winchester, bloodbag em, saved them both again when one went down and his friend ran back to hachet the Zeds while I picked them off with the Winchester

Get the cherno tents, they hold off the zombies with their pistols

One shouts " I've seen an ak in that tent"

He grabs it and shoots me in the face with like a whole mag

Two minutes later they are both raging as they died

People are just stupid

However on an upside note I gave a guy in berezino a handgun and m16 and transfusion and told him if he turns around at any point ill shoot him with my CZ

I made sure to leave the ammo separate so he had to reload the m16 if he tried anything

I said there was plenty of loot in the two dead bandits who had killed a guy with only a pistol moments ago who I think both the unarmed and pistol guy might have ran straight to berezino from solnichny

The guy sounded very scared after witnessing me kill those 2 bandits and complied before I sent him on his way

i absolutely HATE it when people just turn on me and shoot, after i've helped them. what do they think i'm gonna do? i've already helped them, clearly i'm not out for blood. do they think they're cool or something? if this ever happens i make it my mission in the next life i have to hunt them down, then break their legs/ knock them unconcious, and kill them in the worst way possible, after letting them know that if they had been friendly then they would not have met this fate. it feels so damn good getting that sweet revenge kill/,, whether it be hunting them down and shooting them, or breaking their legs and leaving them for dead with lots of zombies around, it is so damn satisfying. when someone is a total asshole to you there is nothing like utterly destroying them and having them know it's you that got them :D

and i'm usually such a calm fellow

The hardest thing to do in DayZ ... is to visit the forums knowing it will sour even the best of in game experiences, when you inevitably read yet another feckless e-pissing contest.

Perhaps the contributors are also the players that are so hard to trust :P

I'm like you Blippy, except I have become a bit less of a bandit.

The worst situation like that that happened to me was going up to bloodbag a guy with a hatchet on Elektro hill, who for whatever reason I trusted. While I'm blood bagging him he decides to cave my head in with his hatchet.

Talk about gratitude.

A bandit's outrage over someone who does not play fair? No ... this is good. The drama some DayZ players generate is first rate entertainment. Please write us another story in the same vein.

But seriously OP, you've confessed to sneaking up behind other players and taking them out. Do you genuinely think you deserve some kind of battlefield honor from others - such as the revelation of their true intent before they act - in light of your own code of interaction? Everyone who plays DayZ "pays their money and takes their chances".

DayZ is the perfect example of Darwinism.

The stupid are impulsive and often times lack common sense or logical problem solving skills, they're more likely to get stuck and have no means of saving themselves, let alone anyone else. They're also significantly more likely to shoot you for no apparent reason other than being bored... Or they just D/C and never come back, but let's just chalk that up as them starving to death or managing to unintentionally kill themselves with a rusty spoon.

Smart players, those who survive longest - and hypothetically have the best chance to procreate, are the ones who try their best to ensure their own survival, and/or try to aid others as well.
