Computer shuts off randomly?

Recommended Posts

So, I haven't had this happen ever like this consistent with any other game... but.. my computer will randomly power off while I'm in the middle of the game. I cannot figure out why. It's not like it starts lagging.. the game is running smoothly... then it shuts off. Third time this has happened. :/ What could be causing it? If you need me to post computer information I can.

Sounds like over-heating to me (I may be wrong though). Have you checked the temps while you're playing?

Woah how much of a coincidence?! My PSU gave up the ghost today after a couple of days of this. Yea just to reitterate the above, sounds like its your powersupply mate. Check how warm it is when it does it and see if there are any burning smells comign from it. Get it replaced ASAP though as it can have an affect on other hardware.

Most likely overheating. I had this issue too!

Your fan on your graphics card has most likely stopped working. You'll have to leave the side of your case off and have a deskfan blowing inside of it (or buy a new graphics card/card fan.)

Cleaning it out with compressed air worked wonders for me, sorted loads of issues out.

ok what others have said is right hear is what to do

step 1 if it needs it clean you're pc

step 2 daownload and install speedfan http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php and then check you're temps

step 3 if it is over heating replace the fan that is faulty (if it is not overheating skip to step 5)

step 4 if the prosesser is overheating but all fans are working the change you're thermal paste

step 5 if the pc is not over heating it prob you're PSU (power suply unit) STOP USING YOU'RE PC* and then change you're psu

* when i say stop using you're psu i mean it when you psu gos it can take other parts of you're pc with it and therefore can cost A LOT more

Can you immediately restart your PC after it shut down or do you have to wait until it starts again?

Great comments in this thread.

I'd like to add that a failing hard disk can cause unexpected shutdowns as well. Usually random shutdowns occurring more often until the PC won't boot up.

Ah.. so.. either overheating or power supply? Could it also be dust becaue on the top my computer is pretty dusty. It's been pretty hot here the last two days aswell if that could be contributing.. should cooldown over today and tomorrow. And I recall having some sort of program that read the heat on my computer.. it might be the one linked by King Tubbs.

ah, speedfan! I typed search in it on my computer and I do still have it. Does Speefan alert me when my computer is getting too hot? If it does next time my computer shuts off I can see if that is the issue.

I don't have DayZ up and running, took a break about half an hour ago.. but two of my items have fire icons next to them.. that can't be good.

And now one.. Temp2 is 56C.

GPU: 50C

Core 0: 49C

Core 1: 51C

I have four cores.. but it only lists two. Their temperature is jumping up and down constantly.

My computer automatically turns itself back on after shut down.

and @Fraggle: I haven't been checking my temps but now with Speedfan up I'll check my temperature every 30 min or so with it so make sure nothing is overheating!

Thanks for all the good feedback too!

Just make sure that before you spend any money at least try giving the insides a good clean, even if you're getting good temperature readings because they can be inacurate sometimes. If the top of your rig is dusty it's probably much worse around your fan and the intakes etc. I clean mine every month or two now and it makes a massive difference.

Lol.. just checked my comp about an hour in.. every single one has a fire icon next to it except for one.

Core 0: 74C

Core 1: 69C

Temp 2: 71C..

Rest are in 50's and small 60's.. but.. dang.

Hmm cant be overheating unless it goes 90+

Failing PSU is an option

or you might have some loose connections

are you on a laptop or a desktop?

Laptop = overheat/Failing Battery

Desktop = a plethora of possibilities

You can not judge that unless you know which exact CPU model the TO has.

Uh.. I play on a regular computer, not a laptop. Also, I got those figures only about 30-50 min in and continued to play for another additional hour or so.

check thread in my sig and get "hardwaremonitor"...

some rough values for room temp 20°:

- Motherboard and AUX should not exceed 40°

- CPU idle should be max. 40° / load at max 70°

- GPU idle max room temp. / load at max 70°

Nice, I didn't know that. The reason I keep banging on about overheating is because by opening my case and cleaning everything with compressed air it solved so many issues I was having. I was getting similar temp readings to the OP. I've also heard that temp readings are not always accurate. Even if you're not sure I still HIGHlY recommend anyone cleans the inners of their rig occasionally. Seriously, when I opened mine up the amount of dust in there was embarrasing, i just had to look at it to know it must be causing issues.

When I asked some of my mates it turns out hardly any of them regularly clean it out and some have had over-heating issues. It's a VERY cheap way of keeping things running nicely, it's at least worth trying before you start looking at new fans etc. and should be something every one does as basic maintanence along with the usual defragging etc.
