STANAG / STANAG SD - Whats the point?

Recommended Posts

Cant the actual weapon modification (the silencer in this case) determine the noise of the gun..

Why does the ammo, while identical, come in two different packages?

Also, why not allow people to "merge" or split their STANAG into SD?

Is it a bug atm?

I'm making a discussion thread for it here, before making a bug report, which I almost did.

Seems a bit odd that you must have the letters SD after your STANAG clip for it to work in your gun, despite that being unrealisitic?

It's ammo with a lower muzzle velocity that doesn' go BOOM as much as other ammo

Subsonic ammunition is not a prerequisite for effective suppressor operation. It's just a way of making the silenced weapons arbitrarily more difficult to use, out of some sense of balance.

There is however no reason that a regular M4 cant shoot Subsonic ammunition

worst case scenario you move a gas operation lug.

So regular M4 should take any STANAG

It's bullets with tiny parachutes that drag behind them to slow the bullet down to below the speed of sound

so theres no sonic boom.

Subsonic ammunition eliminates the sonic boom.

If you shoot regular ammo through a silenced weapon there will still be a loud "CRACK" whenever you fire.

I would assume it is because the vast majority of suppressed weapons use subsonic rounds

It's a limitation of Arma 2, not this mod.

Basically, all ammunition within a magazine shares common properties. That is to say, they cannot be mixed. Also, the weapons are not moddable, so you cannot attach a scope, silencer, sound suppressor or any other paraphernalia to a weapon you have.

You can get around it (with scripting) by deleting your weapon and spawning in the weapon with the item attached. This creates more work for the modder though as you need to have a model of the weapon for each conceivable combination of accessories.

According to my M4A1 in Dayz, I can load STANAG SD as well as STANAG. Do other weapons not do this?

Unless Rocket has changed it for DayZ, all assault rifles should accept their SD equivalents. The round won't make a supersonic crack, but the muzzle sound will be loud.

If that were the case, why can you put M9 mags into a G17?

Because when BIS added the G17 to Operation Arrowhead, they decided to allow M9 mags for it.

This is the magazines config entry for the G17:

magazines[] = {"17Rnd_9x19_glock17", "15Rnd_9x19_M9", "15Rnd_9x19_M9SD"};

There's a lot of peculiarities in the ammunition system between Arma 2 guns and Operation Arrowhead guns.

Seems to be a lot of confusion here, suppressed weapons only accept SD rounds, but unsuppressed weapons accept either or. (Reference) [Look up your specific weapon, pistols appear to be totally interchangeable between (non)SD ammo and (un)suppressed weapons]

Ah ok, thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

I knew that non silenced guns could take the SD or non SD mags.. and figured the reverse was possible too, and that this was almost a bug.

Didnt know about subsonic ammunition either.

Love moments like this when you feel like a newb.

Thanks guys :)
