Electronics, skill books and crafting

Recommended Posts

I think it would be cool if you could find electronic components in the world and craft simple things from them. Now, I'm not saying go down the whole resistors/capacitors etc route, as that would be far too complex, but if you could find things like circuitry, copper wire and maybe even soldering irons you could craft things like rudimentary short range radios, door locks, maybe even a fan that makes a noise to attract zombies.

Now of course, not everyone knows how to make a radio from old circuitry, but if the skill books idea sticks around, you could find an electronics textbook and use it as part of the crafting recipe.

So for example, you could have 3 circuits, some copper wire and a soldering iron, to craft a short range radio, using the textbook. But, if you are doing it for the first time, there could be a higher chance of failure, as you're not quite an electrical engineer just yet, so you can just take one look at the book and say "yep, all 400 pages of that have been memorized, I don't need this anymore!" (I'm sure this is a point that may have been raised before, but pah, I'm lazy, sue me.)

I would argue that, while it would be awesome, having lots of different components would be a far to complex system, especially as not many people know the resistor colour codes. Sure a simple google search would yield the answers, but having to tab out of the game all the time would get annoying.

Dont get me wrong, i'd love to see a system as in depth as the individual components, and having to hunt all over for a specific 400 ohm resistor to get a radio to work, but it's the kind of thing that wouldn't interest anyone who isn't an engineer, and would probably lead to more frustration for the player.

I'd rather see a simple system implemented first, then make it more complex as development goes on.

that would be fine I guess ^^

If you are familar with the "acre" mod in arma 2. That is going to be implamented into Stand alone.

That sounds awesome; but I would like to see craftable radios (and other useful electronic) that are simple (ie a simple receiver and tuner), rather than just "here's your radio, in perfect working order, just needs batteries!" If you can craft, fix and find mechanical things, why not electrical?

I want to see a whole list of things that require batteries especially lights/torches etc that would add such a dynamic angle to this game and I'm sure they are implementing it for SA.. crafting of electronics on the other hand is a pretty interesting idea..

I'm thinking being able to use "car head lights" separate from vehicles them selves..as in you can rig up a alarm system with "spot lights" above a fence and when triggered "BAMMB" blinded by the light.. I'm sure i seen somewhere rocket was explaining overall how he wants that minecraft style freedom in dayz of being able to craft complex systems with things like the infamous redstone wire circuitry.. anyone who has played minecraft will know the potential of the red stone wire circuiting was only limited by you imagination
