About texture loading distance

Recommended Posts

I have a question/ suggestion for the SA that is a simple change of variables.

Like everyone of us we hope SA will be more optimized than the mod itself. Now it is very important to note what I mean by "optimizing". For what I understand optimizing means getting the engine to run more efficient on a code level. It does NOT mean dumping down quality or removing geometry to improve fps. That for me is a very important thing. Though what I see in many games when devs start talking optimizing they start to dumb down quality of the stuff that does not immediately stand out. However those things WILL stand out once you play the game for some time.

When Rocket was asked questions how they would improve performance he pointed out that zombies where a big performance hit. And that with a simple change in material for zombies performance should notably increase. However from my experiences zombies are not THE problem (perhaps because I have a fairly good cpu). From what I experienced myself it is simply the amount of geometry and textures that play the biggest role. And for the amount of textures and geometry that gets displayed I think the RV engine performs rather poorly.

Now for my real point. I have played Arma 3 alpha for some time now and I have loaded up chernarus in it. Which gave me better performance to a certain extend. Many people stated Arma 3 was more optimized but from what I experienced I do not agree. And that is because the optimization from what I saw came from dumping down quality on textures. The distance when High res textures are loaded in is reduced quite a substantial bit. Just look at the trees in the distance. And when I scope down into the forest with a sniper rifle my fps drops by a wopping 70% because then I see the high res textures suddenly loading in. Test it for yourself if you have Arma 3. Yesterday I also played the recently leaked build at a friends house and I observed that same loading distance. I am not judging in any way on that built because it is old as hell but since I observed that loading distance also in rockets dev blog vids it is giving me some concerns.

My question: Are we going to get the same texture loading distance as Arma 2 or will it be dumbed down?

Suggestion: Keep the high res texture loading distance at least high for trees because otherwise it ruins the view of the landscape.

I have also noticed that ArmA 3 blurs a lot of textures which you don't see at first glance but are noticable if you play a while. It's such a difference to me that if i would place a vehicle the same distance in ArmA 2 and ArmA 3 i wouldn't be able to see the vehicle in ArmA 3 that good or not at all. The practice of dumping details is already old, that's why you can still play new games on year old consoles and think it's state of the art but compared to the PC as platform far from good.

I tried replicating the same conditions for ArmA 2 as well and had a huge performance boost with of course server fps related problems which i cannot control. All in all the frames were more stable in the big towns at the cost of quality of course. It's a bit more difficult to spot targets far away and close up you see the textures like the markings on the roads and the edges quit blurry. But it's not as bad as it is in ArmA 3.

Because it would scare people off? All I can say is that I really enjoyed it, things are looking very good. Of course a leak is not pleasant but I don't think it will hurt the game in any way

No, because it's downright rude and disrespectful to the devs.

Analogy : My friend and I were listening to the car stereo he stole from you last week, I have some questions about what functions it has.

Correction: My friend and I were listening to the car stereo he found laying on the street last week, I have some questions about what functions it has.

important difference.

Can we be a bit more on topic now

Downloading that standalone build off the webz is basically stealing from the devs. Even if your friend downloaded it. You're playing with stolen property.

Again, it's very disrespectful. It wasn't supposed to be leaked in the first place.

@felix No, I don't think that's correct at all.

You know/knew that you were playing an unauthorised leak and that you shouldn't be. Just because your "friend" "found" it does not legitimise it in any way whatsoever.

We don't like the leak, If I steer your thread off topic to try to get that fact home then I'm well within my remit.

You absolutely are but I didn't state that legitimizes it. I wanted to state the difference between "stealing" (posting the build) and "finding"( finding it on the web), still wrong but there is a difference. Now I am feeling bad for playing it , but I meant no harm.

Well considering how the Admins care so much that topics stay on topic...yeah he has played a leaked version...but who knows who might have leaked it? Maybe the devs themselves or the devs or maybe they should have checked their testers better...? What's on the internet is public and nobody can stop it. So don't criminalize people if you don't know the exact truth. Oh yes the whole ArmA league also played a leaked ArmA 1 Alpha version afaik it was even in the forums lol...guess who was part of it...? And even after those players told BIS where they could tweak the game they still released a buggy version scaring away potential players...
