When is DayZ?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Just thought I'd start a discussion out of insight and boredom.

I was recently playing DayZ and some other DayZ related mods, and it's come to my attention that DayZ is set in an odd time. It lacks many modern cars and features many older types, yet some features suggest otherwise.

I sort of concluded it being somewhere in the late 1990s or early 2000s, because there are some vehicles (for example the Volkswagen Golf MK IV, which is the earliest model that resembles the in game golf) that have only been around in years prior to the 1990s. However it would be flawed to assume the mod as being based then; as there are some features of the map that suggest either Chernarus being a small settlement country (having slow development) or being set quite early in the modern age.

I was thinking about vehicles and how little variety there is, and I was pondering weather (either in future mod releases or the standalone), more modern cars will be added. If I were to walk outside right now and observe the cars coming past on the street, I would likely see a lot more variety than single-colour, single-model cars as seen in the mod. In this new age there are many, many types, colours and builds of vehicle that are available to the public, and I just feel that they deserve their own place in game.

My questions for you are:

-When do you think DayZ is set and why?

-Would you prefer to see a more modern setting in DayZ (larger buildings, more modern vehicles, more variety)?

-Would you prefer DayZ be based in the present or the past, and why.

-If DayZ were to include more vehicles, which types would you like to see?

Bring the discussion!

I say the whole game should be nerfed. Every player should have 150,000 HP and everyone runs around with wooden spoons that do 5 damage and have 3 uses.

I think the only reason there isn't any modern cars is because the people of Chernarus seem poor.

it is good question! cars on one hand seem to be completely perforated by rust. but the start of the infection doesn't seem to be as far in the past on the other

Chernarus is primarily farm land. The vast amount of water and 1 major port suggest it is relatively isolated.

I think 2004

Regardless of the intended or actual fictional time period, I like to envision post apocalyptic Chernarus as an amalgamation of the early 1980's Soviet Era and our more modern age. Lends the whole show an eerie, twilit 'Outer Limits' feel that suits well my suspension of disbelief. Moving from Chernarus to Taviana and on to Namalsk, the active Soviet flavor thickens, with the effigy of historic Soviet leaders captured in paintings on walls and statuary in city squares. Makes one feel like he has stepped into Cold War Eastern Europe.

But who's to say the game can't be based in more modern times in standalone, what's to say that the world can't be re-imagined? Rich people, concentrated population, business boom. Perhaps an excess of oil was found in Chernarus and people flocked from many countries to profit from it. Not only would it add new, exciting objects and areas to the map, it would be quite something to experience in game.

Thoughts?
