Pack Mentality, Pack Behavior

Recommended Posts

Zombies are supposedly governed/driven by the most primal, savage of needs; a relentless hunger. To that end, a pack hunting mentality would be very interesting to face - both for the lone player and player groups. Zombies that split into packs, packs which perform different behaviors such as charging at the player, encircling the player, flanking the player and cutting off exits from alleys, streets, fenced in yards, etc. I do not want "Einstein" zombies, however base instinct is a powerful tool of nature and the in game the outbreak has been going on for over a year. It's time the infected/zombies learned a bit about how to best their prey ... about how to catch ... us.

Because the topic is pack behaviour, how about hostile wild life, such as feral dogs, rare bears, snakes and other creatures, selectable by admins as appropriate for the environment. Perhaps the ability to domesticate dogs as pets, facilitated by dog food found in supermarkets. They could be left at tents or settlements as guards perhaps when not travelling with the player?

Also It would be neat for player characters when killed to by zombies to become zombies, perhaps high functioning zombies that retain some kind of memory of their home and carry the previous kit, and have limited equipment use ie weapons. So that the player may end up having to kill a variation of his previous character, it would be a moment with much pathos.

I believe studies have shown that the Zombies lack any really "Basic" primal instincts besides limited muscle control, and the desire to eat. http://www.smtexas.n...page/page3.html

Basically put they are single minded. Animals on the other had, would be an awesome idea

Yea because there is only one right person who can define a zombie.

But I agree, packs would be lame. Hordes would be better.

A hoard would be easier to kill with automatic weapons fired due to the size of the target compared to lone Zeds. But hopefully no one will have that kind of ammunition so that shouldn't be a big issue.

Zeds are too dumb to flank. They currently flank due to arma 2 soldier AI and It is quite stupid really. I don't know anyone that actually likes the flanking Zeds.

No one does, or at least I don't.

They are nearly impossible to hit if unless you're lucky until they get up close to you. Not saying that zombies are a challenge, but the flanking makes no sense and often results in pointless injuries.

I'm completely for upgrading the zed health and attack so long as they are actually easy to aim on.

I don't want them to flank. the OP does though. It is hidden in his little wall of unorganized text.

I always loved the part in The Walking Dead comics about the Zombies following a sound they've already forgotten. A gun shot in Msta for example could be heard by Zombies in Staroye and other surrounding areas, eventually but not necessarily other shots could ring out more north in which zombies in that surrounding area would hear it and follow the noise which eventually creates the 'Herds'.

In my opinion, accidentely bumping into one of these Herds when low on supplies would be one of the most scariest things to happen in SA especially if the game has a stamina system depending on weight. If you're being chased by 20-30 zombies I'd say dropping that new shiny weapon with no rounds from your backpack would be a nice survival choice or perhaps any objects you've gathered for constructing weaponry or shelter.
