liquidmind 320 Posted April 28, 2013 I guess by those definitions, I'm an FPSRPG guy. I'm practical and have fun fighting, but I try to not be awful to people if I can avoid it. After playing on a few private servers (where I'm not at risk to lose my three awesome weapons and tent), I've sort of developed a system for PvP. In low priority areas, I either avoid people completely or try to talk first, unless I'm very sure they're going to try to kill me. In higher priority areas (barracks, helo crashes), it's kill on sight unless I absolutely know they won't come across me.I'd call that RPG responding to FPS. It seems like you react to the environment.I think the main difference is wether you identify yourself with this one life of the character or if you don't see a character at all, only looking for targets to shoot. I find it difficult to point out the exact difference, but when I die f.e. in CounterStrike, I am pissed for a moment because my attempt failed, but I don't feel I lost a life. When I played a month on a diablo 2 hardcore server and lost my level 60 character with lots of good gear on him, forever, it was a real loss. I think the amount of emotional investment in a character is what makes the difference between RPG and FPS.

I'm not saying I don't respect the people who RP, or I laugh at them, but the part of my respect that keeps me from being a douche is different from yours, if only slightly: What I really respect is the time and care that goes into a life, and I don't like taking that away on sight. It's a practical point of view that an RPG player and an FPS player should be able to respect, though the latter obviously often doesn't.

Even if I die, I don't consider my freshly spawned dude a brand new character. It's just the same old me.

At the same time, death can happen so easily that I just look at things practically.
declan223@gmail.com 271 Posted April 28, 2013 Also, second question: What's a good non-sniper PvP-suited weapon that's not extremely rare? I'm currently holding onto an SA-58P, and love it, but I know not to get attached to my gear. The M14 is a very good PvP weapon, high damage, decent rate of fire, not too loud, not too rare, ammo is very common, nice clear sights and it's pretty accurate too.I really like the Sa58's. I had a Sa58V which I lost when I was afflicted with the teleporting Hero bug at the north west airfield after spending the whole day getting there.
herrjon 478 Posted April 28, 2013 I gave a real go at RP'ing on Lingor Island, a map I'm not familiar with, went pretty well, was writing a story out, then the server shut down.
pawlzz 18 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) My tips:- Don't actively follow your targets. Just don't. ( I think it's a personal thing though)- Be extremely careful, but when you shoot, do it aimed and definitely. No "rough attempts".- Wait for a good moment (it takes some time) if you do the first shot that reveals your position, but then act fast.- Don't shoot if you don't have to, why risk your stuff?- Do not kill everything that moves, Don't be a scumbag.Good Luck :D Edited April 30, 2013 by Pawlzz
