Not a new player, but almost no PvP

Recommended Posts

Hi, first post here.

I'm by no means a bambi (where did that name come from?); I've had the game since late February. Since then I've rented a private server and have been playing with friends where we just build bases and scavenge constantly. Very occasionally I go on public servers to get the tension of potential PvP. The thing is, my PvP experience is extremely low. I fought and lost a half-assed fight against a sniper on sniper hill by Elektro, and I shot a sniper sitting on a roof at NWA. I didn't learn much from either of these as the NWA guy was unaware of my presence, and I was stupidly tricked into thinking the sniper at Elektro was reloading (so I stood still to try to hit him with an AK at roughly 150m; not that hard but a bad idea against a guy with a DMR).

So I'm really pretty inexperienced when it comes to PvP. I don't have friends who I consistently play with, so I mainly work on avoidance and only engaging when someone's a clear danger. What are some other important things do I need to know/take into consideration? I've done some reading, but I feel like my situation's a bit different from most players new to PvP (as I'm not new to the game itself or how things work).

Thanks in advance.

To be honest, unless you're actively playing a bandit, you've got it spot on - look to avoid confrontation/other players wherever possible, but don't be afraid of shooting if someone's clearly (or even just likely) to be a threat to you.

DayZ is a strange beast at the moment, as it's populated by 1/3 players who will just shoot anyone they see on sight, 1/3 'friendlies' who charge around Cherno and Elektro shouting out that they're friendly and then wonder why they get shot by bandits/Kill on sight players, and 1/3 players like yourself, who aren't openly hostile, but are unlikely to go out of their way to engage other players unless they have to.

It's really all about what you're looking to achieve - that will likely dictate your playstyle and the way you go about things.

Bambis originated from FrankieonPCin1080p. Its another word for fresh spawns / gearless players.

If its an even fight (level ground, moderately close range etc) HIDE! Thats what I do. Hide and wait for them to pass, then empty your clip into their back.

Learn to recognize the sounds of guns / where the shots are coming from, and once you are confident with that, whenever you get shot at, HIDE! Then crawl to some cover. If you manage to find them, fire away. Get a good guess as to where to aim (how far up abover their head etc)

Otherwise, try to avoid them. If you are lucky enough that they didn't see you, sit prone, and if you want to take the risk, shoot them when you get the chance.

Good luck.

PS. HIDE!

PVP is mostly about luck and more or less about skill.

If a player accidentally sees you with his mp5 while your patching up your buddy in middle of nowherre with a bloodbag its easy for him to plant a bullet on your heads if hes not seen.

If your at the right place at the right time. You dont need much skill to put someone down. Same goes for zombie aggro in a gunfight

Ive had zombies knock people down. and battles turned because of it.

Thanks for the responses, guys! (would it be gratuitious to give you all beans?)

It's funny because I've deviated between all three (although I never found anyone during my KoS phase, which was right after my first death in the middle of nowhere).

Also, second question: What's a good non-sniper PvP-suited weapon that's not extremely rare? I'm currently holding onto an SA-58P, and love it, but I know not to get attached to my gear.

...and how do I get my sig to not appear as a URL?

lee enfield. Besides the low rate of fire, it's a great addition to your arsenal.

When you are in the text box signature editor thing, click on the tiny picture of a tree and put the URL in there.

Well, one that won't get me killed by zombies, as well. :b

I did, and it shows as an image in the editor itself, but it still shows as a link?

How big is the picture, it won't let it in if it's over 800x150.

Well, it's a rotator, so that might be part of the problem... But the resolutions are both 600x120.

Go on a full populated public hive and stand in the middle of Electro, Cherno, or NWA, you'll get in a firefight in no time.

Honestly though firefights are scary as hell when you have good gear or just don't want to die. Nothing gets my adrenalin rushing like a firefight in DayZ. The pop and cracks of the bullets whizzing by, the sound of you taking a hit, and just the fear and rush of the moment makes it crazy. Yeah there are times I like to get in firefights or want to get in one, but once I do I no longer want to. Instead it instantly becomes a fight to survive and never enjoyable at the moment.

When the firefight is over and I survived or got away, I sometimes look back and think, "That was kind of fun." But that is rare. Most of the time I think of how lucky I am to be alive. I've been in countless firefights and a TON of crazy ones back when I was a bandit. It seems like you never fully get use to firefights. Yeah there are times when I think, "Well here we go again. Time shoot back and drop this guy." But every time I get in a firefight, it is always a fight for survival.

Where am I going with this post? Well what I'm trying to get across that PVP isn't exactly something you want a lot of. Unless you are a COD style player. Yeah PVP defintley keeps stuff fun and interesting at the end of the day, but it's generally in heat of the battle, it's not fun.

I believe you might also need to upload the sig image to a 'whitelisted' site such as photobucket and link to it there.

As for the weapon, I also quite like the SA-58 variants, as they're not all that uncommon or hard-to-find, and they're nice and versatile. Another good option is the AKM or any M16 variant. To be honest, unless you're planning on doing a brass-balls charge to the NWAF barracks and shooting your way out, the only reason you'll ever need any kind of primary weapon is for PvP, be it for offence or self-defence. Zombies aren't currently enough of a threat to really warrant anything beyond a pistol, and once again, what you carry will depend largely at what range you're planning on engaging enemies. For cities and other high-population areas, an assault rifle is ideal - preferably an M4/M16 or similar, as STANAG rounds fit lots of guns, and ammo will be hard to come by. If you're planning on lurking in treelines and ambushing, a sniper is going to be much more efficient - the CZ550 is a pretty decent shout, and isn't too hard to find (or at least compared to the other, higher-powered rifles).

My personal favourite is the L85A2 (I think that's the one) - usually comes with an ACOG scope or similar for longer-range work, takes STANAG rounds, and doesn't make much more noise than the M16 family. Only downer is that they seem to be pretty rare - I usually find them at the military camps in Stary Sobor.

PVP is actually a rare event, You got to remember it is a 2252 km map so that even with 50-70 people it's still quite large. A lot of the time there are the campers around the major cities, Stary Sabor, and NWAF. A lot of time I see people but don't engage them just because It's too far away and I am not positive I am going to hit the target. In the 8 months I have been playing I have gotten only One (1) Player kill, I am not counting some of the Bandit kills I have had, they were cheap. But that was because he showed up at NEAF while I was looking for some more M4SD rounds or another weapon. It was a situation I couldn't risk him taking our Ural full of Helicopter parts.

I'm yet to get a pk too. I fall under the 1/3 that runs around yelling FRIENDLY!!! and then getting pwned by some bitch sitting on a hill a billion miles away. What can I say? I'm a kind, caring person (hurrr)

Also Paul, welcome to the forums, it's always nice to see people join that are polite and don't write like they were abused by a dictionary as a child.

The most important thing in PvP is to see them first instead of the other way round. Work on your situational awareness and sneaking...

I'm not much of a PVP fellow. If it comes my way I am keen to neutralize a threat but most the time I stick to the woods and patch up other survivors.

if you want to get better at PVP and be a overall better player, I reccomend

---Try out some single player missions in arma

---If your feeling confident in yourself go ahead and load up the wasteland mod

these are great ways to get you better at pvp and playing arma

Well, I got the sig working. Thanks, guys.

Understood on the sneaking, and let me make clear that I'm not searching for PvP, just looking for tips for the occasions when it's probable. I've mainly kept away from the cities and such when I've got enough supplies and am just trying to find a safe place to put the M107 and DMR I found at NWA...

Though sometimes I feel like going to the sniper hill by Elektro power station to dole out some preemptive justice on prospective bandits would be fun.

Edit: Wasteland? Seen videos, seems pretty cool but pretty intense. Didn't think of it as a training tool, though. Good idea.

ive been playing wasteland quite alot, cant say it has helped me in dayZ pvp... you get to know the weapons and how to use them for sure.

My patience in pvp after wasteland was drastically getting worse. Havent played it in awhile now so dayZ pvp is getting better :)

Yeah, I'd be careful with using Wasteland as a 'like for like' training tool for DayZ. It's a good way of getting used to the pressure of pvp play and finding what weapons work for you, but it's also worth remembering that players in wasteland aren't as careful with their lives as they are in DayZ, and you're much more likely to be using/facing gear that's either rare or doesn't exist in DayZ.

Still though, it's well worth doing if you remember the differences between the two - Wasteland is actually very good fun in its own right.

Alternate points taken. I've played some Arma II custom missions with some DayZ players, and it definitely helped me with checking my surroundings in urban areas/assaulting defending a place with active defenders, though of course, like you said, we weren't as careful as we would be in DayZ, and we had weapons that were somewhat rare (though we tried to stay away from anything that wasn't in the game at all or extremely rare).

When it Comes to PVP, it's 1/3 skill, 1/3 seeing first and 1/3 luck.

There are situations, where no amount of Skill will get you out alive. There are situations, where you do everything right, but die due to bad luck. (broken bone on a staircase, zombie aggro through a wall, ...) But in the few cases, where it makes a difference, being focused, keeping a cool head and knowing how to use your weapon best against the weapon of your opponent, is what gets you out alive.

But I'd say, the fewest of all player encounters are contests of skill. In General, the one who sees first and makes the decision to kill first is the one to survive, when bullets have to fly. So being a Roleplay-Gamer really sucks, when you meet someone who in your world seems to roleplay a psychopath, just out there to kill. Especially if you want to try the peaceful version before shooting, your life depends wether the other one is a First-Person-Shooter or a Role-Play-Gamer.

In my opinion, the biggest problem at the moment is, that FPS and RPG Players play the same game, on the same servers, in the same time. That's like having a Map where one half tries to build mine-craft-style while the other half plays WorldWar 3 shooting around nukes. Some way to resolve those conflicts between those 2 entirely different, but equally valid types of gameplay will certainly be needed in the future or one of those 2 groups will be extremely disappointed and leave. (Lucky for us, at the moment it looks like the FPS-Players will be disappointed with SA. )

Bambis originated from FrankieonPCin1080p. Its another word for fresh spawns / gearless players.

I suppose the term Bambi stuck because it somehow perfectly describes how unarmed freshspawns are in a way innocent little animals who are more likely to be eaten, then to prey on someone themselves, who very likely are at the very moment coping with the recent death of a loved-one. Their old Character.

But it's interesting how the word grew from a "look at that little bambi" by one streamer in a video to being used by the whole community to describe or insult. memes ftw. :-)

I guess by those definitions, I'm an FPSRPG guy. I'm practical and have fun fighting, but I try to not be awful to people if I can avoid it. After playing on a few private servers (where I'm not at risk to lose my three awesome weapons and tent), I've sort of developed a system for PvP. In low priority areas, I either avoid people completely or try to talk first, unless I'm very sure they're going to try to kill me. In higher priority areas (barracks, helo crashes), it's kill on sight unless I absolutely know they won't come across me.
