papapudding 2 Posted April 13, 2013 First of all,Hello!I've been a xbox gamer for a while now and figured I might make the jump to PC gaming, I built myself a rig over the week and I'm excited to finally be able to play DayZ.However since I'm an obvious noob I'll need a few pointers, and thats where you (yes you!) come in.I'll need myself a noob friendly North American server (Canada) without hackers in it, (I've read bad things about the scum).I'm a grown man so I don't mind losing my gear to PVP as it is only fair and after all it gives a sense of worth to the things you gather as you could lose it anytime. Also, from what I've gathered from youtube vidyas is it true that I should adopt a "don't trust anyone" policy?Any survival tips?Regards, papapudding

-Gews- 7443 Posted April 13, 2013 Also, from what I've gathered from youtube vidyas is it true that I should adopt a "don't trust anyone" policy? Any survival tips? You can trust people if you like, after all, what's to lose? It's all an experience. Don't be attached to your gear. I wouldn't be doe-eyed and trusting of any player I ran across, but you don't have to shoot every player on sight. Also the largest and most obvious tip: stay out of Cherno and Elektro if you want to live a while. You should go to a hospital in either city before venturing North and pick up a couple morphine and antibiotics, but after that, just run out of there. You can find most other stuff in less dangerous locations. Also, regarding PVP - perhaps the most important thing you can do is making sure you see them first... Steak and Potatoes 13480 Posted April 13, 2013 Your playstyle should reflect on how you feel. Get used to the game dynamics and see how it treats you. I wouldn't adopt insta kill on sight status unless that is what your aiming for. Alot of good dayz exp comes from meeting people, getting screwed or getting a great night and meeting new friends. Just play around a little bit first and see what you would like to do with your ultimate goals. I too came from console and took the medic route never turned back since. Some nights I get shot others I joyride with randoms signing road songs for hours.
nox81 28 Posted April 13, 2013 Hello there!I am also a former xboxer and still ocassionally enjoy some xbox however making the jump to pc gaming is a good move, we gamers must broaden our horizons!I speak to you as a 3 week greenhorne but i'll share what i've picked up with some heavy playtime in those weeks.Yes its true you cant really trust anyone unless its someone you know and trust in RL. My first experience on this game with contact with another survivor was very good, he was friendly and helped me out big time. However that made me too trusting and i can tell you i have been killed many times since, often by kill on sight tactics but also and most frustratingly by people who have took the time to win my trust only to then shoot me in the back......the bastards! However it is part of what makes the game fun.....My advice would be to start of playing on low to mid population servers as it gives you the chance to learn the map and game without continually running into violent, blood thirsty bandits. dont get me wrong on low pop servers you can still get banditry but people either keep to themsleves more or are more friendly, either that or you just wont run into anyone much.Try to avoid the south coast killzones (particularly on busy servers) of Cherno, Eleckro until your armed as they are hotbeds of PvP and bandits target those areas as lots of fresh spawn noobs tend to head there and make good target practice for them and their shiny new sniper rifles. When you first spawn look to the bottom right of the screen as it will display the nearest town name and can help you work out where the hell you are.Head to barn buildings for decent starter level guns early on, safer than the firestations at said hotbeds of death. You can aquire other essentials at supermarkets such as the map, a better backpack, hunting knife etc. You want the gear to make yourself sustainable in the wild as early as possible, always think 2 meals and drinks ahead.Take a look at the wiki for lots of good starter info:http://www.dayzwiki.com/wiki/Main_Pageand also why not study the map and loot/spawn areas:http://dayzdb.com/map#5.049.128It will take a fair amount of playing experience to get a feel for this game but if you'll get there :)While i say avoid those towns of Electro and Cherno initially, if your on a low pop server you can try your luck in them and get to know the layout. But if you go into them gunless on a busy server i assure you that you will meet with a violent and messy end, they are deadly towns and again if your on a busy server avoid travelling along roads between towns.Theres so much more to it but the wiki, other player guides on the net, you tube videos and of course playing are going to be your best bets for getting to grips with it.Enjoy, its a game of experiences thats for sure!

dallas 5195 Posted April 13, 2013 (edited) Friendly people often get shot because they stand in the middle of the road expecting everyone to come shake their hand and talk about the weather. If you see someone, get behind cover. From behind cover, you can say: "Hello, I'm friendly, but I have trust issues." Taking cover serves two purposes, you can't easily get shot and you can't easily shoot the other player. Because you're not in a position to kill the other player, he's less prone to panic and put a preemptive bullet in your head. Also don't trust anyone, who says: "Trust no one," trust me on that. You'll dictate your own playstyle, first time you murder another player, how you feel will influence your gameplay. Obvious getting killed by other players has the same effect. I feel very dirty dirty bad bad baaaad, whenever I've straight up murdered another player, so I'm forced to play as a friendly survivor, if you feel great after killing the shit out of someone, you're a natural born bandit and should embrace it. There's no shame in being a bandit, the game needs all types of playstyle, so it's impossible to predict what kind of person, you come across. If you exchange words with a stranger, be perceptive, does he come off honest and sincere, is he overly friendly or condescending and rude. If you get a bad vibe from a player, say good luck and good bye and if he follows you, you might want to shoot him a little bit. Also it never hurts to keep an eye on your new found best friend, if he's constantly lining up behind you and making an effort to point his weapon in your head's general direction, something or someone might be up to no good. Meeshe 170 Posted April 13, 2013 Find a Hatchet, best Zombie killing weapon ingame. Don't get fond of your equipment, you are going to lose it, but take heart, its easily replaced.Don't kill unarmed survivors, don't kill just to kill, just a suggestion :) Have fun
Shea 13 Posted April 13, 2013 tip:good gear doesn't last long! Consider it already gone, because you will die many times for no apparent reason. Most people die over and over before ever getting to use the shiny military gun in their cold dead hands. The running joke with finding a sniper rifle anywhere is that you'll most likely not have a chance to use it before you die.
tobias winfro 305 Posted April 13, 2013 Welcome to Dayz, its OK for you to not trust people straight out of the gate. There are a lot of decent people that play, although there are a lot of KOS people as well. Find a hatchet, don't forget to reload it. Keep your head down and try sticking to the woods as much as you can. Hope you can find a decent hive to call home and be careful if you find a Lee Enfield as its been nicknamed the dinner bell for a reason. Good luck
smoke_ 2 Posted April 13, 2013 Be prepared for frustration. I remember when I got my first helicopter: I flew around and got a ghillie suit and an as50 from chopper crash sites. When I landed it on the roof of a petrol station it clipped though and blew up... Bullshit happens a lot, whether you get out of a car and it breaks your leg, a zombie knocks you out in one hit, you aciddentally put your awsome new rifle into your full backpack, or the game decides that it wants you to take a long fall into the ocean. My advice would be to carry morphine and have a buddy with you. Dayz gets old quickly if you play alone, not just because of the social aspect, but because of how often another player can save you from a long run back to your corpse. Saethkept 134 Posted April 14, 2013 (edited) Some basics you'll want to gather ...- Food and drink (very obvious)- Matches, hatchet, hunting knife (harvesting and cooking meat)- Morphine, antibiotics, an extra bandage (to deal with broken bones and infection/a cold)- A heatpackA few tips ...- You really do not have to enter a town or city for any of the above- Treestands and remotely located sheds and barns will have everything you need- You do not have to go to the NW airfield to get military gear- Helicopter crash sites are a better bet, as are military vehicles (some spawn with weapons inside)- You don't have to respond to other players in chat who either call you out, or seem to know your name somehow ...- Just because someone is shooting at you does not mean you will die. Run, duck, zigzag, find cover, return fire, let them come to you- Proceed at all times as if there are hostile players in your area.- Not everyone is out to shoot you on sight; pretend however that they are, and try to watch them for a bit before interacting with them- Watch chat ... you'll usually learn the good from the bad from the awful rather quickly- Clan tags are usually trouble- If someone says hacker in chat, you might want to log out- You're going to have a great time! Yoshi1991 14 Posted April 14, 2013 Trust at your own risk but can pay off at times too. The very first person I met on my first time playing dayz is my current playing partner, we met outside a random supermarket, he hit me with his hatchet as he thought I was a zombie, once he realized I was a player we started chatting and have been roming the hills together ever since.
nox81 28 Posted April 14, 2013 I would like to add, that after last night i should advocate giving people a chance even more. Played on a full server that was essentially a kill zone but still random teamed up with various people and had a great time riding helis and buses and roaming the map and loot zones with a partner(s), was great! Yoshi1991 14 Posted April 14, 2013 Also, about 30mins ago I ran info a fresh spawn on his first time playing. I gave him my extra water bottle I had in my back pack. Then led him to an industrial area and sent him on his way, its nice to be nice.
