Yes you can. There is a mod of the mod, called DaiZy, allowing you to practice and get familiar with the environment in a single player setting, with friendly and hostile AI NPCs etc.

setting it up might involved a bit of tweaking, i havent got it to run on the one attempt i tried, but i'm sure you'll get help here if you run into issues.

Singleplayer won't be available in the standalone, it's a multiplayer game.

The information here given is not entirely correct.

1) DayzMod can be played as a single-player-mission. There has ben a new one released a few weeks ago. You just need to download it separately.

2) Rocket himself said, that they are looking into a single-player-option in standalone and that it is possible that there will be one.

Even tough nothing is confirmed yet, saying it is impossible is wrong.
