Practice flying in the armory before trying to fly it in DayZ. Just some friendly advice.

Press Q to start the engines and get lift, then press and hold Z to lower. I reccomend playing some normal ArmA II before playing DayZ to get used to the weapons, vehicles and overview of the game.

Remember not to land it too hard or you will break the engine and probably the main rotor parts!

what also might help.... When ingame press 'esc', then go to options and search for controls :) there they are explained to you.

I'd recommend playing the helicopter boot camp mission... It'd be a shame if you found a helicopter in DayZ and crashed it as soon as you took off.

If only people would actually try the fucking game they purchased (Arma 2) enstead of asking these question. There's a tutorial and hell a mission editor in which you can learn to master the flight controls... Hell you could even try to look at your controls in the option window...

I've found lots of helicopters... and instantly crashed every single one of them. I think hovering is not my strong point...

Yes, don't take off in a heli in dayz until you've tried them in Arma II and are confident in your abilities. I had one time someone tried to land with no auto hover, crashed the heli, killed himself and about 5 people on the ground.

to start the engine you have to very very carefully shoot just below the rotor with an AS50 this will jump start the blades into moving, after that just hop in and off you go

Hint - Learn to land or hover without the use of the 'Auto-hover' function as quickly as possible.

I find that it makes you a very easy target, if anyone's packing a big gun.

people really have a hard time flying the Helis? First time I flown one, I pretty much got it up and started flying and picking people up. Its stupid easy to fly them.

first time i flew i didnt realize auto hover was off and crashed into a tree killing 4 people... this is why you should practice flying in the armoury regardless if you think its easy

I literally worked out the controls of planes and helo's within 5 mins of each, hard to believe but it's not exactly difficult...

I find mouse steering easier to play with so you might wanna try that but I agree with almost everyone else out there, use ArmA tutorial first. Make sure not to point your nose too far down when accelerating because you can lose altitude and fast too while nosediving! Auto hover is a beginner pilot's friend but as you get more experienced, it is recommended to try and get out of the habit. Don't try anything too risky in DayZ. Save the stunts for ArmA until you're comfortable with it.

I agree, the best thing to do is practice in the armory or editor. Just place a heli on the map and then, like people say, use Q to start engine and lift off, use Z to go lower. You can use the mouse to move the head of the heli down which will make you plummet to the ground, or if done carefully, move forward. You can use the mouth to tip the rear of the heli, which will make it go higher/pull back so you don't plummet to the ground screaming. :beans:
