Standalone Zombies a bit OTT?

Recommended Posts

It was, but spreading rumors is more fun.

Watch out, we have a specialist on zombies here.

They're coming to get you Victus.

If it was a zombie sim then they would only die from headshots. However they don't..

On topic though. Surely balance > realism and difficulty.

I'm sorry but real life (and hence a simulation of it as best as possible given any game engine) is not balanced, end of story.

Honestly I love the PvP aspect of the game but with the current Zombie diff they are just such a non issue. I welcome the idea of harder, faster, smarter Zombies in the standalone... Will make you think twice about firing off a round at a random bambi if they are a serious threat.

So after watching the new dev blog I've noticed the zombies -or infected- are unbelievably fast with better path finding skills. Now the new zombies when outdoors are fine but with the new loot system -loot under objects- and the fact zombies can run indoors, wont this make looting near impossible and just more another frustration in a frustrating world?.

My proposal would be to actually make the zombies walk indoors again, however their speed should be upped from the current -in the mod- by 20%. This change would make looting more of a ticking timebomb before you get trapped rather than how I think it will happen where zombies will be right up behind you when you're inside a home at the ridiculous pace they are in the new dev blog.

I understand people want Dayz to be hard but in my opinion I think Dean is going a bit over the top in terms of zombie gameplay, obviously things can change in the alpha but i'd just like to know peoples feelings on the matter.

I wouldn't say that the infected are 'unbelievably fast' rather that their speed is totally believable, in the devblog they seem to be just as fast as you which makes sense, surely? Also, improved path finding is a good thing, it makes them seem more realistic. They chase you just like you'd expect them to chase you, rather than running around zig-zagging. It seems that you don't want the infected to be more realistic because that would be harder. But that's the whole threat, and the whole fear of the infected, is that they're a danger.

Of course it will make looting harder, that's a good thing. As it is looting is stupidly easy, you simply run into a building and loot everything while the infected, for no reason, switch to walking as soon as they enter indoors. If your looting tactic is to run through towns, aggroing infected and then running into buildings to loot then yes, you will find looting in the SA much much harder, and that's because that tactic would be stupid in a real zombie apocalypse. This game has infected/zombies as big danger, it's a zombie survival game, so the zombies should act as you would expect them to and not be compromised because you'd find the game hard. Adapt your play style, use stealth and you'll find looting to be fine.

With regards to your suggestion to make them slightly faster inside buildings, but not the same speed as outside, that shouldn't be implimented because it wouldn't make sense. Why would they slow down when they're inside? They're trying to kill you. If you take away their primal drive to attack you they're no longer scary, as in the mod. They just become a slightly nucence, a threat who politely slows down when they enter a building.

Also, I'm not quite sure you can go over the top with zombie gameplay in a zombie survival game.

From what I heard in the dev blog the current speed of the zeds was upped due to the problems with the pathfinding, This could mean that with the fixed pathfinding the zeds speed may be reduced.

I class 28 days later as a zombie film, infact it's a very popular opinion and a long ongoing discussion on IMDB. :)

So would I. Infected or undead, they're all zombies to me. Infected humans can be killed by anything that would kill a normal human being though, that's the difference and the point that I was making. :)

So Tiger kind of answered this in the above post but here's my 2 cents as well.

First of all, the devblog showed the new ai pathfinding in its roughest form. The player and 'zombie' were at the same speed and it showed only the basic principle of the new system. He also mentioned that the zombies are currently "insanely" fast to compesate for the old crappy A2 pathfinding(17:30 on the the latest devblog). So their speed could be slowed a bit to make it even possible to lose zombies. Obviously the easiest way to lose Zs right now is to basically exploit the weaknesses in the pathfinding system instead of try to outwit, outrun or sneak past.

Rocket is obviously an intelligent guy. They'll come up with a good system and it will get tweaked as the game progresses. Remember, he's releasing the SA as an alpha as well. Although probably more of a polished alpha than the mod. I have faith, it will be badass.

Zeds will be just fine. I talked to Rocket on the forums once for putting him on blast for making zombies as difficult as they look in the video. He replied back calmly and told me they were fixing it and that he doesn't want zombies to be godly. The next mod patch after that whole discussion, they were back to their current easy state.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

You know what this means?

You'll have to... like... NOT AGGRO ZOMBIES IN ORDER TO LOOT.

No more running through buildings to lose zombies, either.

Get on the ground and CRAWL, maggot. Learn some stealth. Once the SA comes out, you either stay unseen or don't stay alive.

Personally, I fucking LOVE the implications of these changes. The CoD kiddies will get frustrated and piss off. weapons and ammunition will be valuable, and zombies will be terrifying.

but hey, if your idea of a 'survival game' is running into a building with a zombie train in tow, lootng it, and then moving onto the next building without a care in the world, then please, stay with the mod. The standalone will NOT be for you.

Did you miss the part where Rocket said that they would be slower?

Yes. link me.

He didn't say they would be slower specifically but at 17:30 approx in the devblog he said their speed was made "insanely" fast to compensate for the bad pathfinding. So you could extrapolate from that statement that he intends the Zs to be slower when pathfinding is improved.

They are a little slower than a player in the standalone.

Err.. No. Zombies pose absolutely no threat to most of us because of this. Well, that and our legendary tree hiding skills. Without these crutches we'll have to actually play the game to survive.

I welcome anything that forces us to use our brains.

@OP Your thinking about it allllll wrong... why don't you just not be seen when you're sneaking through to loot a building? That way you're free to loot in peace. It sounds like you're gonna be running thrugh the town yelling and screaming and you decide to stop for a quick loot while being chased. When I was playing the mod I could crawl/crouch/move slowly and loot without agros... it just takes a little bit of patience.

QFT All of the above.

Zeds are a total non issue atm, possibly the worst and easiest they have been since the beginning. We need them moving faster indoors and we definitely do not need a 'quick grab' option, smoother animations will hopefully go a long way towards fixing some of the hopeless ones we have now..but regardless, you can still enter the smallest industrial , get in the door and grab a toolbox and a tyre and then get out without any worries even with zeds glitching through walls.

Bring back the eternal chasing Zeds of last year , anything to get rid of the hopeless ones we have atm.

I'll take fast deadly smart zombies over slow impotent and stupid. I can always be more careful to combat the former, but in the case of the latter there is no fix. That said, as long as they can't run you down in a straight up sprint there will almost always be an out to any situation.

Great standalone isnt even out and the crybabys already complaining about zombies lol. Man when will you get trough your heads that this is a zombie game (therefore zombies should be the main threat period), and zombies walking in doors? How come are they retarded or they cant run indoors ton ot damage the china or furniture? LOL

i know this i a long shot but maybe some server could have like easy mode where zombies walk in doors and a hard mode where zombies run in doors. i'm sure some servers will change how the zombies behave i like the idea of zombies running in doors even though i have massive problems with zombies attacking me now one thing i would like though is down grading the zeds sight i get seen by zombies slow crouching from half way across a feild i know what ever rocket will try to make dayZ the best possible game he can there will be tweats through out game as well.

thanks for asking the question hope you liked my answer

The walking indoors wasn't really an ideal feature of the mod. It was necessary to prevent them from running through walls and other some-such. Arma 2 really wasn't designed with close quarters AI in mind. Even getting around objects can be a bit out of reach for the A2 soldiers.

I like how just the notion of fixing the zombies have people whining for a nerf. How about we wait until we see them in game before we discuss how easy you want this game to be?
