Hip Firing vs. Aiming down the sights

Recommended Posts

We are the DayZ bandit community (REAL bandits, not bambi killers), we are no strangers to looking down the sights of a high powered virtual rifle and hitting the mouse button several times, putting a few into flesh, and then a few more to finish it. But my question is this, when do you actually use those iron-sights?

In DayZ, the necessity to actually aim is what separates us from those arcade shooting kiddies. But, in many a situation, I find that aiming down the sights can get me more than killed, it can ruin my rep as a good bandit. I mean, you stopping in the middle of a fire fight to hit that right mouse button can really make you look like an idiot.

I'm sure many have made this mistake, underestimating your opponents and thinking you have enough time to rattle off one to the head before he puts a few in your gut... so... when do you guys ditch the almighty ironsight/red dot, and go to the ever classic green crosshairs, or even blank screen for those of you that play on no CH servers?

I usually use CH when I am laying down cover fire in a fire fight, and have plenty of ammo to spend when I need different cover or realize that wasting my ammo could give me long enough to reach that ever so close treeline. Spraying and praying on full auto usually results in the pissing of more than a few pants, mainly when you hear the cracking of the sound barrier past your ear, and dust patches around your head. If you are spraying with something like an M249 or Mk? Forget about it, 9 times out of 10, your enemy is heading for the hills. But ironsights while doing this, can often get you killed. Precision isn't key here, intimidation is.

When I am in a zombie horde, not worrying about headies. Who needs headies with 5 30 round clips? lol

Or, when I am in a CQC situation and your enemy is aware of your presence. This one is obvious. Unless it is a Makarov vs. High Caliber rifle situation, and a headshot is key, with little chance to survive... then you have little need for ironsights inside a building; UNLESS you are peeking. Pop out from behind a shelf on full auto in the Cherno store, bam bam bam bam bam. Done. More :beans: in the backpack.

How about you guys?

I only use iron-sights, and (not to brag like a douchebag) I've been a notorious bandit on a bandit, and nobody ever killed me. I've also done a fair sahre of helicopter-ground insertions where I'd get placed somewhere and I've killed a lot of people that way. Like one time where a friend let me off on a rooftop, and I killed the man just below the ladder-hole, and I used sights when he was maybe 2 meters away. Same with another time where I climbed a ladder and the guy I was looking for was standing there, I used my sights that time, too. And zed kills, gotta use the irons for a headshot. It's just Arma experience, in my opinion, I can't not use my sight. I don't even think I've ever used hip-fire to kill something.

I use iron sights almost always, exceptions would be if the grass is blocking my view of the target or if I'm very close and it would be more effective to just use the crosshairs.

Another rare exception would be if my ghillie suit is blocking my FN FAL sights. I hate that!

Of course I never hip fire on CH:OFF servers.

Well when I want to bust some zombie heads I use iron sights since the crosshair is slightly "pushed" to the side so you need to aim just a little bit to the up-left . Another case is , when i want to shoot some player I use ironsights becaose I got used to it and I got realy good aim with them . On other hand as OfficerRaymond said , I use CH when i want to make a suppress fire and intimidate the enemy to make him retreat .

Iron sights are generally the way to go. There are some situations when I will hipfire (Mostly CQC with an automatic weapon) but you need to actually hit something to kill it :)

See why do you want the enemy to retreat? If they run, they know your location, so it becomes a disadvantage for you since they can flank you. I think that you should always shoot to kill.

Ironsights are the cautious and patient man's friend. I always use them if i spot some prey, but before aiming down i always make sure that noone else is around and spending more than a few seconds sighted down is usually the way to get yourself killed. Use your Ironsight like you use your trigger, in short bursts with checking your surrounding in between.

I always aim down the sights because i play on vet servers which dont have the ez mode cross hair. The only time i dont is within 5m because at that distance I can work out the area im going to hit from the direction my weapon is pointing

I am usually religious with iron-sights too. I have been playing Arma for a long time, and well, I'm the same way. But, I usually don't aim down the sights when I'm doing one of the things I mentioned. I like being time efficient, and when I know I don't have to use IS, then I don't. Also, in the case of covering fire, I don't need to be accurate.

Every other time, day in day out, I'm looking down the sights.

Nine times out of ten, the enemy will take cover from incoming fire as a reaction to being shot at, and with luck will allow me to switch my POV behind different cover, without them seeing where I went.

I get what you are saying, and yeah sometimes it really doesn't work, depends who you are shooting at. But when an enemy is behind a wall hiding, they cannot shoot you either, also giving you time to get away.

Depends on the skill of the enemy . I am not a bandit so I rather spray the fire than take careful aim and shot the enemy dead (I kill someone when it is realy realy neccessary) .When I see enemy retreat I do my vanish kung-fu and Im gone B)

TL,DR I hip fire if you are closer then 20M otherwise if you're farther I will use short bursts and aim down the sights.

I once killed someone while hipfiring with the Bizon, just because he ran around the corner and gave me a fright after I had just logged in. I went fully auto and mowed him down. It only took the entire clip...

My squad and I once snuck up behind some bush wookie and I no scoped them with an M107. Believe it or not, I missed with the first shot! Hahaha... The hackusations began soon after.. Apparently all 5 of us teleported behind him. Yeah, because I have so many hacks that's why I spawned an M107 and not an AS50.

Other than those 2 occasions I don't think I have ever fired my gun on purpose without aiming downsight. Plenty of accidental discharges though.

Why the flying fuck did you no scope him? This isn't CoD, aim down your sight's next time.

Yeah, using a scope at 20m with a sniper rifle is so necessary....
