Grabbing Ledges

I had the idea that you could lower yourself off a ledge and hang onto it then let go for a slower drop and you can jump, grab and pull yourself up places. I thought this could be as simple mechanic to make moving around a bit easier, of course making it slow and loud because not everyone has a hobby of free-running. First there's an animation of putting rifles on your back or pistols in your pocket (something like that) then you jump or drop and grab so we don't do a modern fps run-up-a-ladder-while-shooting kinda thing.

It's an interesting enough idea. Some parkour style stuff would be cool to see in DayZ but nothing on the level of assassin creed's.

Hmmm, I don't mind this (unlike random jumping). It worked pretty well without looking silly in the Splinter Cell games. Sam Fishers might want to take off their backpacks if they're full of heavy supplies before trying to grab onto stuff though.

maybe as an aquireable skill or something.

Are you telling me you couldn't go out a hang from a ledge right now? These are the kinds of skills I'd rather not see in the game.

A better approach would be to allow players hang from ledges and clamber over obstacles right from the beginning, but make it so that the player character's strength slowly increases or decreases, depending on how much hanging they do over time. Then, depending on how much weight and equipment they have on them they either can or can't do these things, depending on their strength.

I don't think that hanging from a ledge is feasable, try doing it with a full compliment of tools and an assault rifle in your backpack and see what happens. More likely would be to sit on the ledge and lower yourself down slowly.
