Staying legit as an admin

I like day Z. I love banditing it up, I love running into people. I like seeing server comunities. I like rivalries with other bandit groups.

Me and me amigos just started a server and I was wanting to ask all you other admins out there, How the hell do you stay legit? To keep from having massive dupes and cheats you have to check inventories, camps, vehicles. you know where everything is. you know where everyone is. You know what they have. How the hell do you not become abusive? I like hunting down camps, and stalking players. I'm good at it. But I can't stand the idea of being or being precived as an abusive admin. Is the only choice to go hero mode?

If you need to ask yourself that question then the job of admin is not for you.

For us, we have like 6 admins that use the tool. The only Admins we give access to see all those things are ones that do not play DayZ (usually our BF3 admins) we show them how to use the tool, etc. Thus we don't have to worry, because we know even if your an honest admin, once you see a campsite, it cannot be unseen, you'll always know its there, you'll know to stay away from that area or so hang around to kill/steal.

It's a super powerful tool, and if all your admins tend to play on the server, it's always going to be at the back of your mind if one is abusing it, I see many servers where we played and we were like... How the hell? We saw one where we killed the admin, then we died not far away wondering how did they get to the spot so quicky, which is simple, long as you know the x/y you can teleport with admin tool.

This is why we decided to get our own server until Standalone, and remove the OP stuff because thats what most hackers spawn in, so it's an easy catch with that alone.

To be honest I have found that most admins are very abusive. I don't think I have been on one server where the admin haven't helped themselves and their friends and if you ever find one of their camps or take their vehicles (without knowing it's theirs) they use the admin powers to track you down, kill you, or wait 'till you log off. Then use the map to find the vehicle and take it back. I have been on really good servers with really nice admins but on every one they have used admin powers to their own gain.

As an admin you shouldn't be raiding bases, that is just a general rule I follow. As Althoretjs said, most admins are very abusive. When my clan gets in trouble with an opposing clan, I stay clear of all conflict between the two mainly because I have information that could, without my intention, be used against them. As an admin it is your responsibility to keep the server safe, but it is also your responsibility to make sure it is fair to ALL players.

The server I play on has great admins. He just sticks with his group and loots. He doesn't hoard vehicles so he doesn't care to raid camps. I remember back when I had my server and these tools first came around. I just decided to ignore the camps, and if someone else in my group found it, then we would finally go raid it, but I never would say where they were.

No fun using the tool to win, the game turns way too boring too fast if you use them to your advantage

This is pretty much all that needs to be said. It can be tempting to use the tools for your own advantage ... As soon as you do that you have two choices:

1. Stop playing on your server.

2. Stop being an admin on your server.

If you can't do either ... Then you might as well turn your server into a full PvP server and give equipment out to everyone ... Because chances are that no serious players or hard core immersion players will stick around for long on your server.

This is actually very sad ... my only suggestion to you is try to find better servers to play on. I have very strict guidelines for my admins, I don't want to hijack this thread - but if anyone is interested, PM me and I will start a new thread with the guidelines I try to enforce on my servers for my admins.

Well the unfortunate thing about my group is I know most of them can't be trusted wtih admin powers. I can try to stay tight lipped about shit but idk. I might take your advice and see about insulating my self by using a friend who plays a diffrent game but that seems like a challenge in and of it's self.

I'm sorry that so many of you feel that one questioning how not to abuse power is a sign that he should never attempt to shoulder a responsiblity. Unfortunatly there are many abusive admins.

I don't think it was intended as a personal attack on you or negative in anyway ... as an Admin (specifically a Private Hive) you have access to so many tools that can be abused ... so you have to have a high sense of ethics and morality when deciding to be an Admin for a server.

I think the comments made, were more of a statement of fact that you need to truly ask yourself why you want your own server and what type of players you want to attract your server. When you answer that question, then I think you can decide what type of Admin you want to be ... the choice ultimately is yours and yours alone.

Pretty much this, the tool I use gives an audio warning when something dodgy is going on so I start it up and minimise it and play the game normally. I've got a rough idea where peoples bases are but I'm not interested in raiding them, if someone else in the group finds one then that's fair game but it's not happened yet. We've hoarded vehicles (found honestly) but that's pretty self-defeating as it makes your camp blindingly obvious and ours has been raided umpteen times by parties unknown and I've no interest in spending the time to figure out who.

Yeah ... I guess that is what it boils down to. Servers with good admins tend to have long term players and loyal players playing on them and a true community builds up around it. The servers with abuse will tend to get players joining for short periods ... and a server with no players is pretty lonely.
