Stafoo 61 Posted February 23, 2013 Remove auto hover add in some Thermals and Air currents might add towards some realism in flying but right now piloting is really easy.
Guest Posted February 23, 2013 (edited) DCS BS and FSX player, as well as someone who almost managed to be a chopper pilot in the French army here (feels bad man) ... Arma's choppers aren't VERY realistic but they surely aren't arcade at all.The biggest realism problem when it comes to choppers in Arma is the lack of systems, but the flight itself is sorta accurate - what misses to make the flight itself realistic would be some more wind turbulences and similar little things - but, aside from the systems part, some guy who plays arma could pretty much manage to fly a chopper in any sim in the same way.Piloting a chopper isn't much different from driving a car or riding a bike - it seems impossible on the first try, but with a little training almost anyone can do it.Now, army choppers are very different, since you really got shittons of systems, and among them shittons of weapon systems. What you have to keep in mind is that Arma, before anything else, is an infantry and tactical simulator - in order to add the realism of a real battlefield they needed aircrafts and these were added, but it's still not a flight sim. We however have coherent aircrafts that fly properly and are pretty much able to do what the real ones would do.Really, what makes anyone able to be a potential helicopter pilot in Arma or Dayz is the lack of systems, because in real life you would spend 20 minutes turning the damn thing on. But the flight itself is okay. Here's how you turn a KA 50 on: (like I said, only a matter of systems)I however think that the choppers that are in dayz were badly chosen. I mean, the huey, fucking really? Among the choppers that are in DayZ, the only one I can really see being use by survivors would be the civilian Mi17 ...Also the auto hover is OP. I would like to see some of the flight model from TOH in dayz so that you would have to make constant small adjustments to hover just like in real life, but not as extreme as TOH because thats a bit unrealistic. I would also LOVE a proper fixed wing flight model as armas is fricken terrible.... putting full flaps down, throttle to idle, at a ridiculously shallow glide slope in the biplane, you just cant lose speed. Not to mention you have to bank and yank just to get that damn thing to turn. This might be too much to hope for but I would like to see a piper cub, maule, or even a cessna for planes. That would be realistic seeing as you can find cessnas/piper cubs at almost any municipal airport. And rocket has already done a model for a Maule ski plane in arma. gorillax 0 Posted February 24, 2013 Stop implying it's difficult to pilot a small aircraft in optimal weather conditions in real-life. It isn't. A mentally challenged person has a good shot at landing a small plane in optimal conditions if there's a runway nearby (Chernarus is small and has three). Piloting it appropriately by using navigational instruments without visibility and performing certain maneuvers is difficult, very difficult.Thanks.Have you ever flown any aircraft of any kind IRL? From the perspective of someone who does fly IRL, your post is full of oversimplifications and exaggerations. Yes weather is the biggest factor in the safety of a flight, but that is about all in your post that is reasonable. You don't have to be a genius to land a plane but saying that it's so easy that a mentally handicapped person would have no problem doing it, is going way too far. Landing an airplane correctly requires precise control of speed, power, decent rate, bank, and the correct amount of flaring. You also make IFR flight sound like it takes the skill and intelligence of a damn astronaut. Spoiler alert, it doesn't.
-Gews- 7443 Posted February 24, 2013 It is actually not much more difficult to fly a helicopter in a real flight simulator... It is the complex and changing atmospheric conditions in the real world what makes flying anything that flies an actual challenge...Heh, gotta disagree with you there. Clicking "auto-hover" and pressing Q and W isn't that hard if you ask me.If you have several commands to learn just to take off many people tend to throw their hands in the air and give up.Since when did dayz need balancing? It takes time to get top tier gear, that's the only balancing there needs to be.Adding in realism is not balancing. It can have a balancing effect, and that is a good thing. Not just anyone can hop into a helicopter and understand what this means:
SoulShaper2 243 Posted February 24, 2013 I fly a lot in Dayz and i love Take on Helicopters and i wish so bad that the helicopters interface and functions were harder, like having to press right buttons instead of just "engine on" and be done with it, that would mean people who want this OP tool would have to learn how to use it,
p4triot 207 Posted February 25, 2013 (edited) I was gonna answer that I like the way helis are now and that I cant see a reason why it should be harder to pilot. Then I tried the TakeOnHelicopters Demo. Now I want all this fucking awesome shit in the standalone withouth any doubt!! Can't wait to tell to my copilot "take the controls for a while" or having to start the heli through the startup sequence while my mates cover me during the entire process. Its awesome.Only think I would not add is the must for a joystick. Not everyone has one, including me. Which means that autohover and autotrim still has to be in the standalone. If not, pilot is not hard, its imposible. Edited February 25, 2013 by p4triot
