Is it worth it?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have been looking at DayZ for quite some time, it looks really interesting and fun. I wanted to buy Arma II but then though: "Hey, is it actually worth it buying this? Should I just wait for the standalone version? If DayZ goes standalone, this purchase will be useless. I will never play Arma II anyways!". So, what's Your opinion? What would You do if You were me?

I think there will still be a community around the original DayZ for some time to come. I honestly don't see why both communities can't or won't exist simultaneously. I personally plan to keep my original DayZ servers running for as long as they can. :)

In all honesty ... the game is not that expensive through Steam (coming from South Africa at R8.49 to $1) ... I would say go for it. There is still a lot of fun to be had with the current mod. You can also play others mods like Wasteland ... which is also a lot of fun. I think you will get your money's worth from buying the game.

Just my opinion. :)

I bought it, but that was a while ago before the standalone was announced. I've advised others to wait, but then if you want to experience the original mod and its own particular style then you should buy it.

TL;DR

You must follow your own path

Why not play Arma II? It is quite the fun game!

I don't get why folks buy it just for DayZ...

Because Arma II is such a terrible game, walking around makes my brain die from the inside. Some people like 'realistic' games but this is way too realistic. Just give me something like Team Fortress 2 and I'm fine. DayZ is an exception, though. I like it.

You spend 80% of your time walking in DayZ, and in one life you will walk approximately... I think it's about 50km. In ArmA 2 it's only like a 300-500 meter run in case you are like, doing the co-op sniper mission, and then a 1km run back to the extraction point.

Besides, ArmA 2 is a great game. I love messing around in the sandbox mode with my friends (Armory) and sabotaging everything for BLUFOR and OPFOR in Wasteland. I'd say you should just forget the whole thing if you don't like ArmA 2 in the first place, because DayZ is basically a stripped down version of ArmA 2 with survival elements and zombies.

This topic isn't about the game Arma II, but about buying it for DayZ, please stop arguing.

I don't even think you've played Arma 2. If you make your own map you can have a fighter jet fly you to the mission at 600km/h. So don't even start bitching about the walking.

Hard to say, you are asking a bunch of fans whether they think you should buy the game they enjoy. I will say you might be better served by just waiting for the standalone though, you will get the benefit of being in an environment you are completely unfamiliar with. There will most likely be a large number of other new players so the experience might be more enjoyable than finally catching on to the Mod only to get killed by someone who is just bored.

Because Arma II is very old. I bought Arma II just for DayZ, but I am glad I did because it opened me up to Arma itself and I now count myself as a fan of the series and eagerly await Arma III.

Well, if I buy Arma II, I can call myself a Veteran.

You can call yourself a veteran anyway if it floats your boat, no will care. It's not like it's a tour of duty in the Nam or anything.

I brought arma 2 and OA just for DayZ...But I just found out you can play custom missons as Cops Vs Terrorist...needless to say I got in touch with my inner Jihad. I think it's worth it, haven't played normal MP for this. Just DayZ and Takistan Life Revolution so far, i'm sure i'll play even more so I think it's worth it.
