There are main hives with 1 character for all for each map and private hive servers that are seperate characters for each server.

No. As long as you on to a different private hive, you will have a different character, regardless of which map.

As you play on Orcon servers (I don't know how, hacker central) you wont be able to create a new character to take to another Orcon server. You will only have your one character, if you play one server and log out on Lingor Island on an Orcon server, you will log in on Lingor Island on all Orcon servers. If you log out of an Orcon server then log into a private hive, you will log in as a new character on the coast, and that character will only be good for that hive or hive group. If you go back to Orcon you will be back on Lingor Island. Hope that makes sense!

so it cannot be just a regular server. but a private server?. i kind of understand. but are you saying create a new character to a Non-Orcon NZ server. instead an Australian server?

what is the easiest way to do it?

as you log in it goes to the basic map Chern. when you go to the options you can then select Lingor etc.. and the other maps.

it then asks me to restart the game. i assume if/when i do that i have to create a new character and find a new server?

All right, you're not really getting it. A hive refers to a database. There are two types of hives. The public hive, and the private hive. If you enter a public hive server, then that character can be accessed from any server that uses the public hive. If you were to join another server that used the public hive, you would have the same character.

Private hives are databases that only apply to one server. You cannot join one private hive, then go to another expecting to have the same character. There can be multiple private hive servers per map, meaning you could have multiple characters for Chenaurus. If were to go to Lingor, the concept is still the same. You would have a brand new character.

Every server you play on connects to a database which contains information about each player, their location, inventory, kills, deaths, humanity. etc

All public servers connect to a single database that is run by the dev team. This means you can move between any public server and your character will persist. That's why it's called the hive. The only map available on public servers is Chernarus.

Private servers connect to their own database so anything you do on those servers remains on that server, every time you join a new private server you start from scratch with a new character, you can go back to previous servers anytime and continue from where you left off.

Your profile only contains information about your game settings, username, key bindings, graphical resolution etc. Creating a new profile doesn't give you new characters as they are all still tied to the one account.
