Inoperable (light/heavy) Military vehicles as safe houses.

Recommended Posts

Just had an idea (and that idea reminded me of the walking dead). But I think it would be cool if some military vehicles (the light/heavy armored kind) were on the map as an inoperable vehicle spawn. But unlike the standard completely FUBAR vehicles, these vehicles would be enterable. You could eat, drink, lock and even store items while inside them. However they would not have any mobility or weapons capability.

You could have a little "safehouse". They could spawn anywhere on the map. Some near cities, towns and villages and others way out in the forests and backwaters. Inside it, you and some friends could hold up as a temporary shelter from enemies, zombies, weather or even just to hold up for the night. While inside the armored vehicle (safehouse) you would be restricted to 1st person view. Meaning you would not be able to see anything going on outside.

This "safehouse" would be able to be destroyed by high explosives or crashing into them with helicopters the like. (or any weapon which can actually damage the armor) Perhaps even blowtorches could be used to cut the hatch open.

You would be able to store food in these broken armored vehicles and if you are lucky you may even find decent loot such as military equipment.

Imagine being chased by a bandit. You see the tank and run over to it. You get inside and lock the hatch. Now its a waiting game. Is the bandit gonna wait for you to come out? Is he gonna plant some traps? Are you going to have enough food to survive until the bandit leaves? Has the bandit already left? Is he just waiting there with his crosshairs on the hatch waiting for you to come out? Has the bandit brought friends?

If the vehicle was locked and all the occupants dead by dehydration, blood loss, disease or hunger then the hatch would remain locked permanantly. The vehicle would then respawn elsewhere after 24 hours. If the hatch was unlocked, then the vehicle will remain where it is. The corpse becoming disease ridden and contaminating the tank and the supplies. Anyone who goes for refuge may be stuck with a corpse and a few diseases. A bad day for him. After being untouched for 48 hours the vehicle could spawn in another area

I can see a lot of people having a tense and/or interesting moment that I believe would add to the Dayz experience.

Thoughts?

i think most people would run in lock the hatch and wait until they could log out.

I like this idea. In a scenario like this, there would be many heavy-duty military vehicles around the map. Of course, us survivors being your average citizen, we would not be able to operate a military vehicle, such as a tank. That doesn't mean we are unable to utilize these vehicles, though.

There would be tanks, but we can't use them in a way that would be destructive. It's a win/win IMHO.

If my lockpicking was at 100 would I be able to get in?

Can you lockpick a tank/armored vehicles hatch? If so then yes! Otherwise you could use a blowtorch to destroy the hatch's hinges ;)

You could just disable the logout feature. Or have it that if you do log out while inside the tank then your character would be kicked outside for 15 seconds where he would stand defenceless. If he survived being outside for 15 seconds then he would be logged out on the spot. The tank would be unlocked and when you log back in you would be outside. An easy remedy to stop logging out while inside the vehicle and allow the bandits(or people getting retribution) their kill because someone decided to be cheap.

If the vehicle was destroyed while you were logged out while inside then you log in dead.

Tanks are actually pretty easy to figure out.

Disabling the logout inside of these i can see working mabey. If that wasnt the case though, what happends when someone decideds to log out inside of it, because its safer, but in the process theyre forced outside of the tank, another player passing by through the woods notices this person standing there and kills them? Now its not punishing cheap players but instead smart ones.

Or you could just use the Skeleton Key.

No amount of blow torching will open an APC/tank hatch.

You can use the torch to do nice job soldering the copper plumbing lines in a house, rig a solar-heated pipe coil on the roof and you've got yourself a warm bubble bath that Bob Vila would be proud of.

I would get a shovel and a truck, take some time and dump a huge load of dirt on top of the hatches...

Most tanks have hatches underneath as well

Yeah, I like it. Maybe have the odd .50 cal or M240 functional on a gun, but that might be a bit OP in cities.

if the breech is open what's stopping the smoke from pouring into the cabin?

The guy inside who stuffs his shirt into the breach in case it is open...

Anyway without a proper ventilation system he won't last that long in there.

Finally, an idea concerning armored vehicles I enjoy.

+1, if we disable the logout feature. Plus, it would still be vulnerable to explosives like rockets and satchel charges.

Yeah, aborting would definitely need to be disabled.

Yes this would work IRL as long as the breach was open, i meant it wouldnt work in the game because theres no breathing mechanic (or watever it would be you know what i mean)

Yes they could of course add one but thats a lot for the computer to process, seeing as they would have to code in different values for altitute, smoke, humidity..ect

would greatly add to the realism though.
