Guys, Battleye isn't perfect.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. Recently I've been seeing a lot of ban appeals, or more specifically, Battleye global bans.

These threads completely break the rules and ignore all of the stickies in the ban appeal section, which explains the hostile attitude the community generally has towards the people posting those topics. However, I have noticed something else. In those threads, it's pretty common to see a reply that says something like, "Battelye doesn't make mistakes" or, "It's impossible to get falsely banned".

In reality, it is possible to get falsely banned. Not only that, but Battleye isn't known for good support, making it difficult to get unbanned.

"But what's your proof?" you say? My proof is a conversation I had a little while back with someone who was falsely banned.

Basically, this guy had made a thread called "Honestly just wanting to know why". In it, he asked the community what could have caused him to get a global ban.

He got responses such as:

Are you certain your "Little Brother" did not do it ?

or you left your room for a minute and your "friend downloaded something"

or you met a "hacker who wanted to look in your computer"

Global Bans just don't happen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy not playing Dayz

Battleye didn't help either. He emailed Battleye support and received no response. I PM'ed him this (please excuse the typos, i had my old keyboard at the time):

Hi, I saw your post about your global ban. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do except contact Battleye and appeal. The only explanation I can think is that you tried to download a "FPS booster" program of some sort, or downloaded a hack, or something along those lines, or someone who has access to your computer stole the CD key.

I believe that it is possible to temporarily have access to online play by deleting your CD key. I have no idea how to do this as I have never been banned before, so use google. Google is your friend.

Here was the response.

hey man thanks you sound more of a reasonable person i contacted battle and after a few emails i was unbanned and they said it was a honest mistake and have given me an extra copy thanks for the aid tho :)

See? Battleye isn't as perfect as we thought. Not only that, he had to email Battleye multiple times to even get a response.

The reason I posted this was to get people to stop following Battleye blindly, and to make people stop immediately writing these guys off as hackers, and actually consider the fact that Battleye actually does make mistakes.

If you read this, thanks for reading! Sorry about the wall of text.

There's a reason that our attitude towards global bans seems harsh.

Firstly most of the appeals are hackers looking for help.

Secondly, we cannot help anybody posting their global ban appeals. This is why we have stickies explaining this. When somebody receives a global ban it is administered by BE and bans their Arma key. ATM DayZ is just a free mod for Arma like any of the other hundreds of mods and it is Arma that BE have banned them from, again we cannot help them with this.

To sum up then, there is nothing anyone here can do to help people with there global bans apart from direct them to BE. If the threads stay open the OP will either recieve abuse or be given lot's of bad advice/information. Even worse than that they could be prayed upon by a hacker pretending that they can help (we ban a lot of these behind the scenes) which will lead to further issues.

I think you misunderstood my post. I know all of that. I've directed people towards Battleye before, knowing there was nothing I could do (I also did it without the hostile attitude). The point of my post was simply to make people realize that Battleye isn't a perfect system.

Ok, fair enough, I kind of assumed that people already knew there was no such thing as a perfect system.

The posts from some members in the ban appeal section told me the exact opposite.

Agreed, that's why we try to lock them quickly with the "contact BE" advice.

I think people post all of the abuse because hacking ruined this mod for some and I think seeing someone appeal a global ban is an opportunity to vent at a potential hacker.

The guy who supposedly was unbanned in your post could've just bought another CD key and start playing again, all it takes is a google search. To be honest, there is probably a .001% chance to be banned by BI unfairly, since they ban in waves, the program they use probably builds up evidence AGAISNT said scripters and then bans them. Then they come on here and whine about it.

You've been around long enough and you should notice that every single one of those hell-forsaken threads is exactly the same..

"guyz pls help me batleye ban me AND I DIDNT EVUN HACK WTF i nevr hack pls help me an unban me thnks"

I realize that Battleye doesn't falsely ban often. But it does make mistakes, and Battleye has even admitted it before. Telling some to buy a new CD key event though they didn't hack or get their key stolen is not a good idea.

Wait, BattlEye gave him an extra copy of ARMA?

Yeah. It was either to replace his old one or to give it to a buddy, but he wasn't very clear on which one.

When I was a new moderator and super-keen, I used to check out these appeals (remember we have access to IP's too). I can assure you that every single user posting an appeal that I bothered to investigate had multiple accounts on hacking sites. Even the very sincere sounding ones.

I don't bother any more, I just lock and tell them to contact BE, it really is the best and only way to help them.

Like I said, false bans are extremely rare.

At last, we found someone with common sense.

I've been playing Dayz for months, and I visit the community very often. It's common to find posts of people asking for help about this matter, and people just treats him as a CHEATER/SKIDDIE. (Please, lets name things by their name).

I have always thought lets hope I never have a misunderstanding with BE...

I dont suppose you could get me a physical address if I gave you an IP I wanted to track down??? All I want it for is to say hello to a long lost friend...."replaces mag for the sig 226 .40 with favorite hollow points".

As for the OP, I think any idea of attempting to moralize people today is a complete waist of time. With the direction of getting people to see BE in a more realistic light, this to would be a waist of time unless you were in a forum with a bit more mature base. I agree with you, but dont see much of a point with this thread. Again, I look at this the same way you do.

Peace Cole.

"But what's your proof?" you say? My proof is a conversation I had a little while back with someone who was falsely banned.

Here we go, absolutely 100% waterproof evidence:

Basically, this guy had made a thread called "Honestly just wanting to know why". In it, he asked the community what could have caused him to get a global ban.

He got responses such as:

Oh yeah, those are some really hard facts right there.

It's funny how you call this "proof" and believe this guy blindly without knowing anything about him.

This part is made up. Why?

1. He didn't back up this story with screenshots or anything.

2. BE does not hand out new copies whatsoever.

See? Battleye isn't as perfect as we thought. Not only that, he had to email Battleye multiple times to even get a response.

I will leave this part alone.

The reason I posted this was to get people to stop following Battleye blindly, and to make people stop immediately writing these guys off as hackers, and actually consider the fact that Battleye actually does make mistakes.

How about you rather stop following random people on the internet blindly? And believe everything they say without any evidence whatsoever?

Yes, Software is Software and can have issues/ bugs etc. BattlEye is no expection there.

However, it's not like Global Bans happen randomly and one ban here and there is a false-positives. There is evidence gathered behind every ban and every case is being investigated. If there is a false positive, all bans with this specific evidence/ violation will be lifted. There was a false-positive case back in August and that's about it. Those bans have been lifted within 3 days. PB/ VAC had way more false positives than BE ever had, some of them undiscovered for months.

So yes, BE isn't perfect, mistakes can happen. But it is doing a good job, probably better than anything else available... also I'd like to add: There are no false positives atm. ppl who really don't know why they got banned most likely got their CD-Key stolen.

As far as I can see the response simply states hey man thanks you sound more of a reasonable person i contacted battle and after a few emails i was unbanned and they said it was a honest mistake and have given me an extra copy thanks for the aid tho :)

This is no proof that BE ever even messaged him simply a reply from him that he now has two new keys in place of the one that was banned (unfairly) I see what your saying in terms of giving breathing room and less hostility to people like this but after the false positive days there isnt much to speak for newer BE bans.
