TheCabal 0 Posted February 15, 2013 Hello guys!My first post here :) I'm a DayZ beginner and have lot's of fun with it! (was killed many times and will be killed in the future, but there is always something you learn to watch out for next time.I'm asking myself right now if guys with lower graphics settings get any advantages over guys with higher settings?See, I always feel extremly insecure under a tree with lots of grass and shadows. I should feel secure from what I see (higher graphic settings) but how does the guy in front of me see my position with his lower graphic settings? Does he see the shadow from the tree? Does he see the grass in which I went prone? Does the shadow I see on my monitor really hide me? Does he see a transparent human-shaped 3D-object in a low-settings grass-less billard shaped world from far away?I think I heared a guy in youtube mentioning something about white shadows far away, which indicates an animal or whatever.I'm on my longest surviving trip with lots of equipment and this question is getting very important because I dont want to die because of someones low settings! I will then need to change my approach completely....Greetings,Cabal
tsandrey 379 Posted February 15, 2013 (edited) Yes, it's much easier to see people with low graphics settings. The question is however, are you willing to sacrifice your graphics in order to have a slight advantage :D ?I usually turn off postprocessing and AA as it's unneccesary and causes lagg, but I keep shadows as it looks too ugly without them! Raider (DayZ) 47 Posted February 15, 2013 If you disable AToC in-game the trees will become alot less dense so you will be able to see people hiding in there, Downside is the game looks worse.
h3retic 224 Posted February 15, 2013 (edited) AA + ATOC (which requires AA) looks really much better than without itthat ofc at the price of few fps, but in my experience its not that much of a drop.edit: see above, im not the only one who thinks so lawlbut yes, its definitely an advantage, purely gameplay wise, to have low settings.its a smart move to mix settings to give the best looks AND the best visibility Edited February 15, 2013 by h3retic
Meeshe 170 Posted February 15, 2013 Grats on your first post! :)Don't fall in love with your stuff.... I find that a hard thing to do myself, but as someone else told me when I first started playing, "you'll enjoy the game so much more if you don't".If you go everywhere in game, thinking your being watched and acting as if everyone is using low graphics settings, that wouldn't be a bad idea.Have fun
Rollo (DayZ) 20 Posted February 16, 2013 Whats everyone's take on doing this? do you consider it cheating or is it acceptable? I only ask because Ive noticed allot of people doing this lately especially a few big YouTubers that I shall not name in fear of starting another flame war. terrvik 2409 Posted February 16, 2013 If only doing that for that reason I would consider it cheating. But some people might do it because of performance issues and then, well, what can you do? :)As I said before: if it is so important for people to "win" maybe this is not the game to play. I'm not playing it to win anyway.
Raider (DayZ) 47 Posted February 16, 2013 They should disable the option in SA but try fix some fps issues in that area so nobody can complain.
dappadan95 332 Posted February 16, 2013 I see it as an exploit and dont think people should do it but hey what can we do?
kingflip 42 Posted February 16, 2013 It can be, depending on the player i guess. I have mine turned down enough to the point where i can actually play the game, i find that anything above "Normal" completely screw my FPS. so it really depends on a players PC i guess. Food 309 Posted February 16, 2013 I have a high-end PC I built, but I turn the settings down. Mainly because I usually have about 3 other programs always running, and I still get only about 45 FPS. Arma is just horribly optimized.
Mandalore (DayZ) 76 Posted February 16, 2013 There's nothing you can do about it. It has to be an option and it has to be available, because some people can't do without it. Same with the brightness at night issue. You can only hope that people don't abuse the settings.
Inception. 9443 Posted February 16, 2013 I do it for performance setting. My laptop isn't the strongest [but for a laptop it's bloody brilliant] gaming computer. But when things are going well for me, and the server isn't too laggy, I'll put my texture/vegetation details up as high as I can. Hetstaine 10852 Posted February 17, 2013 I used to have mine set on max with the majorly bushy trees and high grass but really ? When most have it all dumbed down i don't see the point anymore. I dumbed it down on one server chasing some fps a while back and nearly had three babies out of my mouth when i realised how much more i could see and what a target i was hiding in trees and such where i was in absolute clear view. Hopefully something they address in the future so we are all on a more level playing field. For people getting shit fps because of outdated or shitty hardware like cheap ass laptops , new games should not be catering to that imo. I am totally disregarding the need for dumbing down because of armas shitty optimisation of course. Companies that sell crap laptops and lowend machines labeling them as gaming rigs should also be dickpunched.

Im a full time college student, living semi-independent, and pay my way every step of the way. so, i cant exactly afford to dish out hundreds to thousands of dollars on a new rig. the point of selling a game, is to cater to everyone's needs, so that the game itself sells to a wider band of people rather than just those with "gaming" rigs. otherwise, pc games would be like console game, being that you can't adjust to graphic settings at all. CS14 133 Posted February 17, 2013 I'd rather have nicer graphics than a slight chance of spotting someone easier, just imo.
irl-calibre 744 Posted February 17, 2013 why would I spend thousands of pounds on PC parts just to deliberately make it look shit? lol I stopped worrying about this quandry back in Joint Ops days..
