SUGGESTION: Weapon Attachment Items

I know how well you all seem to be doing in laying solid groundwork for DayZ, so I suggest this as a post-release major update.

I was playing around and often saw people swapping out their gear based on attachments (i.e. Non-suppressed pistol for a suppressed one). While looking at the dev blog video that showed the new "item-scravenge" mechanic (that seems to be a good way to do things) I thought of a more fluid way to handle weapon attachments; make the attachments individual items that can be mounted and unmounted to weapons using a tool kit/box or perhaps a new weapon tool of some sort.

The idea is that much like food and other items- weapon parts will be spawned around the map in locations that are often hidden. Some gun parts (low caliber suppressors for pistols and red dot sights) will be more popularly spawned than other gun parts (high caliber suppressors for some rifles, 4x,6x,12x sniper scopes).

I wouldn't suggest all guns be able to mount suppressors, only a select few with "threaded barrels" like the M4 and not the M16 (so no M107s with suppressors and whacky s**t like that). Same for optics, the gun must have an optic rail (i.e. so the AKM cant have a sight but the M4 can, and the XM varriants cant be changed). This goes for sniper scopes as well with varrying zooms (x4,x6,x12 seem to be the most popular in games, but maybe even have a x6+x12 variable scope thats more rare military grade, and thermals/night visions/[etc])

Mounting: click the mounting item that opens up a GUI and guns/attachments are there... rest is up to your imagination depending on what the standalone inventory is like.

Why I think this is so hard is because I think it would require over-hauling the entire weapon system and having the attachments show up ingame and swap out like that would be a pain and BLABLABLA so a simple version would be suppressor+pistol=removes mag, deletes pistol, spawns SD pistol....

but an overhaul of the mechanics would be preferred however its just much more challenging.

I believe Rocket already announced weapon attachments were going to be separate in SA, so you will be able to modify them.

And I think its good, cause the its kind of old school not to be able to do that by now.

This has already been confirmed... Many many times. Rocket has been going on about it at length several times lately.

I'd love to see the ARMA 3 attachment system implemented in to S.A, that would allow ideas like this to be "easily" put in place.

I can imagine the excitement of raiding a building, stumbling around in the rooms, checking behind a drawer and finding a suppressor or a high power scope for a rifle hidden away. Especially since Rocket showed off the new loot spawning system where it can spawn virtually anywhere, it would make this really cool.

I'm sure we can expect something like this later on.

This is basically what Rocket has already confirmed, in exactly the way you describe it. Weapons have been overhauled and completely redone, they are now 'entities' which in the architecture of the game is a pretty massive thing. It's why this will all work. Kudos to you for having the idea.

You'll be surprissed how many rifles actually have threaded barrels compared to hand guns...incl. the M16 and the M107. Most pistols don't usually come with a factory threaded barrel unless it's designed for that purpose and/or are fitted with an aftermarket threaded barrel if necessary. And there is a sidemount for almost every modernized AK variant out there, also for the AKM but not for most folding stock versions because of obvious reasons...you can still attach a sidemount but can't use the folding mechanism anymore though.

I wouldn't like it either that every weapon can be modded at the users will. And switching the optics/lasers shouldn't be without consequences ( you should have to find the zero again if you switch guns )

Quite a lot of threads are the same ideas, people just don't take the time to use the search function anymore.

I noticed a new idea here though: the idea of having to properly zero your rifle/weapon when you first get it.
