NO MORE BAMBIs!

Recommended Posts

I've noticed something with DayZ. You find a lot of player bodies lacking something: weapons. Defenseless people that get killed before they have a chance. How can this change?

This can change by adding a few simple mechanics to be always available to everyone, especially players without any weapons.

Strangulation

Basis- A player that is not moving or is moving very slowly can be approached and strangled by another player, knocking the other player out.

Features- Success rate will depend what weapon the other player has and how heavy it is, (how many hands they use as well, so unarmed players have a higher success rate) and if either player was moving when the action was preformed. The victim can fight back, but I'm still working on a suitable mechanic that won't break DayZ atmosphere to suggest.

Disarming

Basis- A player can knock a weapon out of another player's hand.

Features- If one or both players are moving fast, the disarm will simply knock the weapon away. If they are moving slowly, the player can take the weapon from the victim, with the same success rate applying. If the player already has a weapon, he throws the one he disarmed away. There is no retaliation mechanic, but I think a quick-time dodge or even just pressing 'x' or 'z' to dodge should work.

Pushing/Shoving

Basis- A player can slow or knock zombies or players to the ground and off ledges. :3

Features- If a player is being chased and just wants to get away, he can preform a push or a shove, which slows or knocks the enemy down. This can resolve a lot of around the corner combat, as one guy goes down and the other has time to get away. This should be simple, and should have no definite success rate, with no modifiers to it. Doesn't matter what weapon or anything.

If you noticed, these mechanics work together. You can shove someone to stun them, and strangle/disarm them. If you also notice, it does not let you KILL anyone, so new players would still not be lethal, unless they shoved you off a ledge.

Adding these mechanics, in my opinion, would enable unarmed players to survive if they took advantage of it. Right now, it's pretty impossible, which isn't fair. If this is added, things are now fair, even if you died.

As a plus, shooting doesn't always have to be an option, since you could see someone, knock them out, take their stuff, and be on your way. It doesn't have to end in death now! That one single zombie that just won't quit following you, after the 5 others did, you can now knock to the ground and get away before they get back up!

So what does the community think?

I wanted to post something similar. In reality, you would have so many options to hit a zombie with practically anything: a brick, a twig, a chair, a fire iron. In the game, you have to run through half the map to find a particular kind of hatchet. While it is clearly impossible to enable player interaction with every stick and stone in the game, finding a basic melee weapon seems unrealistically difficult. Ability to use your bare hands may help to mitigate the problem.

I think that some sort of unarmed pushing, kicking, punching will be added to SA. It does make total sense to be at least able to push past a zombie or kick it.

But Neko why oh why did you have to use that word Bambi?

Rocket mention using Warband Mount and blade mechanics but it wouldn't be available till late this year

Because a bambi is a player that spawns without a weapon. The player is now the weapon

In the one line question for rocket thread, it was stated that this is already planned.

I don't like frankie's videos. And I heard the term bambi before I knew he came up with it.

Why not let players hide in big cardboard boxes and scuddle around like Snake?

Not being sarcastic, I do it all the time at my local Wal-Mart.

This is kind of irrelevant, but can we stop referring to new players on the game as Bambis please? It's starting to get repulsive.

yea, reminds me of EVE where they call new players carebears. It's silly and arrogant.

Do like the idea though, it's like the pushing of zombies in left4dead, which works well in that game.

I think the idea is fantastic ! I like to stash equipment and then scavenge into towns with nothing on me anyways (except for the hatchet) so that i cant make noise if i have to dispatch any zombies. Being able to push them away means that you can more effectively search a building. This could replace the lack of being able to bar doors shut and the like in order to buy you more scavenging time. It could easily be balanced by making you more vulnerable to attacks from other creatures, thus one couldnt simply push a hoard of zombies off of them, at least without consequences. Great Idea !

First off, having that term in the title attracts a lot of attention to this thread, like you've shown here, as you came and posted this, instead of actually focusing on the main point of the thread. Secondly, what do you want me to say? Newspawn? Freshspawns? Nothing has a ring like bambi (even though I don't like the term myself, and NEVER use it outside of the text boxes), and the thread title would be irrelevant. There will always be newspawns and freshspawns, but with the ability to choke out your fellows without a weapon, you've gone from stumbling ewe to one tough bastard, in about the same time it takes to load in.

Makes you feel old, doesn't it?

Going even FURTHER back. Does anybody remember when posts used to be relevant to the topic? Those were the days.....

@OP It sounds like we're going to be getting something along those lines in the future.

Personally, I hope whatever we do end up with manages to add these kinds of attacks without having to resort to quick time events.

Yeah, I don't know how all these fanboys got so high and mighty about their heroes, but calling a noob 'bambi' originates from tv's Scrubs.

Dr. Coxx calls him newbie, Carla calls him Bambi.

STOP MAKING MY DAMN THREAD ABOUT FRANKIE!! Stay on topic, I do not want to continue this discussion and it is not in relevance to the thread to have 1 and a half pages of it.

I'm all for melee attacks... as long as they are bloody useless:

-Start punching a zombie, he grab a hold of your arm and tear the flesh off your arm/bite a few of your fingers off.

-Try to strangle an armed player, he turns around and bash your skull with his gun until you stop moving.
