Some newbie questions

I'm really thinking of buying the game to play this mod when I get back home from my vacations. I have watched some videos online and there are some things I wanted to ask you guys (and gals):

1. What's the deal with servers? Are there official ones? I'm asking because I guess hacking happens a lot more on "open" or unofficial servers.

2. How does the spawn system work for items and vehicles? I mean, if I pick something up from a hospital, does it respawn after some time?

3. Are there helicopters?

4. Do you have a friends list or some kind?

That's all I can think of for now.. I guess I will have more coming as I continue to watch videos hehe. Thank you in advance :)

1. Your best option to avoid hackers is to join an official private whitelisted server. They have the tools you need to play on a good server / community, without ruining your experience to children.

2. Items respawn after 10 minutes.

3. Yes, the amount and types differ between servers. Our server has 6 I think and is vanilla. (Non-modded, private, whitelisted)

4. Not yet. Most use Steam or Skype / Teamspeak or join a private server that has a website.

There are official servers. They are called the "DayZ Hive" servers. They are all connected to the same database, so if you go from one DayZ Hive server to another, you will continue from the same position with all your stuff.

The unofficial servers ARE actually a better option, though. As official servers are still hosted by players, and are not allowed to be password protected or whitelisted(to only allow specific people to join). This is because of the fact that you could easily get all the loot you wanted and then just join another server in the same database, meaning that you could get everything you wanted with no risk whatsoever.

The unofficial, "private" servers can be password protected and/or have a whitelist system. This makes it so much safe to play on without the risk of hackers because the servers tend to be more closely monitored by admins.

2. How does the spawn system work for items and vehicles? I mean, if I pick something up from a hospital, does it respawn after some time?

In the mod, the loot spawns after you get close enough to a building. The same thing happens with zombies. The loot will not respawn until at least 10 minutes of time, but you have to be at a distance from the building.

As for vehicles, they spawn when the server is first time started up. After that, all vehicles can be used by everyone, and they will stay in place for 7 days if nobody touches or interacts with them. After that time, they will spawn back to their original spawn points. Same goes for the vehicles being destroyed. It takes a week for it to spawn back. (But a server host could technically reduce the spawn-time and/or add more vehicles to the server than there usually would be.

3. Are there helicopters?

Yes. You can try practicing the flight-system in ARMA 2 or ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead. Singleplayer > Bootcamp

4. Do you have a friends list or some kind?

No. If you want to play with someone in DayZ, you will have to keep contact outside of the game and find each other in the map.

I appreciate the added effort; however, my answers were very blunt, not inaccurate.

Not entirely, but there were some things that weren't true.

- Official servers are not allowed to be whitelisted. They break the code of conduct and will be blacklisted from the official DayZ Hive if they have whitelists or passwords.

- Some servers or server providers give you tools of such magnitude that allow you to track players' locations live, as well as every vehicle/tent position. This leads VERY easily to admin abuse, which, will ruin your experience.

- Your server cannot be vanilla/unmodded if it has 6 helicopters. The true vanilla DayZ server is running the Chernarus map, which has one(or up to three?) helicopter spawn locations. Not 6. If it's running some other map other than Chernarus, I can't say if it has 6 helicopters by default or not. But that still means it's not "vanilla."
