Is DayZ considered an indie game ....

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't consider Bohemia Interactive an indie developer, no.

DayZ Mod would probably have been, but not the standalone.

Altho i think Rocket seems honest and open, like alot of indie developers do

Most non indie companies seem to want to grab your money and run

Alot non indie companies also do the play-to-win model, and charge for dlc sometimes weeks after they release their game

And charge for maps (ie battlefield & cod)

When did BI or Dayz charge for maps?

So while i dont think BI are an indie company, they seem respect their customers, Unlike most AAA and non indie companies (Hammerpoint) :P

PS - How many other developers recommend (or are even allowed to) other games that are good to play?

Journey

Prison architect

Dwarf fortress

Space station 13

All games Rocket has said are good in past (bought em and they are)

Altho he also said 120 dayz of sodom was good too, and it was craaaappp lol

:)

DayZ isn't a game. It is a mod for a game (and Arma II isn't an indie game either), therefore it it can't be classed as an indie game. Game game game. Haha.

Indie means independant of a publisher

So am guessing Dayz standalone will be an indie game then

Unless steam are considered a publisher :P

Altho then all indie games on steam wouldnt be indie

:( my brain hurts :(

I reckon so! The game being available on Steam doesn't automatically make it a none indie game. There's a whole category on Steam dedicated to Indie games :)

To me, DayZ isn't an indie game, although BI are by definition an indie developer. DayZ and Arma2 to me are classed as AAA titles. Which brings me onto the quote above.

Both Rocket and the BI studio team are breaking "the norm." of AAA developers these days. They're doing whats RIGHT with games development, and providing to a wide audience, whilst keeping the core spirit of gaming close to their hearts! Rocket is a shining example of what all games designers of the future should desire to be. Too many are closed minded and want to tell a story through safe cut scenes and quick time events. Yet, the best games on the market are those where the players can create their own stories through their own dynamic experience of the game. Rocket is keeping to this for SA, and I love the potential that it brings!

Thats probably enough ass kissing done for the day :P lol

Well, i will put my two cents in here...

Bohemia Interactive Studios are both a development Studio and their own publishers and they are quite a big studio. That is quite rare to date.

They are independent but they are also large enough to be their own publisher. Same with DICE, they are large enough to fund and publish their own titles.

What differs the two is one (BIS) care about their playerbase and still want to make their own game irregardless of what others are doing. They want to make money but they don't go overboard with it, just make enough money to keep making games and not too much money where they lose sight of what is important to them.

The other (DICE) are doing it just for the money, they don't care about their game any more than the part where they make more money from their game. They don't love their game, they don't even like their own game. Of course they will lie and say they do to make more money but the times past where DICE made games they really could stand behind are long gone.

DayZ is a mod of an indie developers game.

On one hand i want to call ArmA 2 a AAA title because it meets all the expectations i have of a big title like any other. But ArmA 2 goes far beyond that in my eyes, it's a fully fledged simulator with astonishing attention to detail.

Just today, my friend was amazed at the quality of a simple lightning strike. How detailed and beautiful it was and the delay between the flash and the thunder. And the fact it wasn't "scripted" into the game like so many other games. Truly a great engine/game!

DayZ SA will be a game, developed by a few BIS employees. Since BIS are an independent studio, DayZ SA will be an independent game to an independent studio.

It will be twice as independent as ArmA 2 and with just the same amount of attention to detail i am sure.

In short and in my eyes, DayZ SA is an indie title.
