Standalone Idea: Base building/entrances.

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I have been following/viewing many interviews on the Dayz standalone and have had an idea. There seems to be a promise on base building underground in an instance-like function much like way you enter someone's house in skyrim. Mostly because building above ground will cause too much lag to be pheasable.

I have thought of a tiered entrance system to limit access to your base but still making it possible to raid.

Tier 1 Cave Entrance

Requires:

Shovel

Locking Mechanism:

none

Forced access:

none

This the basic entrance to your base. It is made by simply digging a large hole with a shovel. The is no limit to access. Anyone and everyone can enter at will.

Tier 2 Wooden Entrance

Requires:

Cave Entrance, Wooden Planks, Padlock

Locking Mechanism:

Padlock

Forced Access:

Fire Axe or Explosives. An axe will destroy the padlock making the door unlockable until the padlock is replaced. Explosives will destroy the entrance, reverting it back to a basic cave entrance.

This is the first level of limiting access to your base. It is a wooden lockable door blocking the entrance to the base. It cannot be accessed with the basic hacket, but rather a more heavy duty fire axe.

Tier 3 Concrete Entrance

Requires

Wooden Entrance, Concrete, Steal rods.

Lock mechanism:

Multiple bolt locks

Forced Access

Explosives will destroy the bolt-lock rods making the door unlockable until the rods are replaced.

Filling the wooden frame with concrete, you make your entrance unaccessable via an axe but still vulnerable to explosives.

Tier 4 Steel Entrance

Requires

Concrete Entrance, Steel Panels, Circuits

Lock Mechanism

Access Panel

Forced Access

Hacking

Plating the concrete with steel panels, you make your entrance invulnerable to explosives. The only way to force your way in is with a skilled hacker.

One issue that came to mind is having masses of these bases/holes all over the place. I'd suggest a system where if the owner doesn't access the base within 3 weeks, an email is sent with the server name/co-ords of the base. 1 Week later if the base is still inactive, the entrance is automatically deleted.

Thank you for reading my thoughts. As this is the first draft proposal, this idea is open to discussion.

I can imagine the first 2 in DayZ, but 3 and 4 seem a little far fetched.

You suggest making concrete and steel bunkers with electronic access panels which can be hacked? How is this all feasible in a post apocalyptic world with no power or supplies?

I am looking forward to bases but i just hope they aren't too over the top. Your suggestions aren't too unrealistic (apart from the electronic lock) but i do wonder if it would be possible to create such structures. I'm no builder so who knows?

I hope they're going to be primarily improvised.

Anyone can enter, it's just that they have to be smart to not get shot by the players guarding it.

It would really give the end-of-the-world feel, ya' know?

The only reason I went as far as the hackable terminal is because in one of the interviews, rocket was talking about the underground bases and using a real life skill of hacking to access them. That seemed a bit extreme to me however seems reasonable if you'd put enough effort into your base entrance.

Just made an account to reply to this suggestion. The electronic lock could be powered by something as simple as a car battery. This would only last for say 48 or 72 hours before the battery is drained which would give you a reason to go back to your base and also scavenge for a new car battery.

Although making the concrete for the walls still seems a little far fetched. Perhaps scavenging actual concrete blocks from around the world and having to use some kind of transport to get them to your base. I mean, if you are going to upgrade your base to tier 4 it has to come at a high price. Maybe the same sort of scenario with the steel girders but they could be carried in a smaller vehicle?

I like this idea. Would create a running cost to make it more suitable for larger clans.

I agree I like idea and if we are trying to keep to realism in the SA, then like DemonGroover said as soon as you start using concerte, steel rods etc.. as building materials you are looking at stuff which which is tough to do without zombies around and the right tools.

The first two completely doable and I take your response about what rocket said about using hacking or something similar (i remember an interview which he talked about that).

Feasible in my opinion, for base protection

Combination locks :- easy find them in hardware stores

standard lock :- i remember someone saying pick locks as loot item, this has been done many times in different games and would give this game an interesting thing. Do you shoot it off and risk a big "hello" to anyone round or do you take the time and pick your way in could create some tense game play.

Electrified fence :- now as someone said using a car battery, how about connecting to a metal fence, in theory could work I suppose, need special gloves to touch it. (i admit in real life no idea if it would work)

guard dogs :- well they are coming into the game it seems, so why the hell not eh!!

trip wire :- wire, some sort of explosive, some good old fashioned tinkering an hey presto!! Just remember where it is!!

pit:- filled with spikes or maybe a zombie, lure one in leave it alone and people will come across and hear a zombie an then they fall into trap, broken legs and one well fed zombie!!

3 locks :- one works other two booby trapped with explosives.

I think most of the above is dooable and keeps within the game ethos, if you through in the ability to have a power generator as well which needs fuel, so only good for clans. You can have power to your bunker and stuff of that ilk just a thought,

i really appreciate the feedback on my base idea. I hope the development crew read this and draw something from it.

Some features like underground bases are going to take a while, they are going to take a lot of time and effort, Some of which might break the engine the SA is built on. My opinion is to create from scratch what is needed as opposed to what is out there. If the new engine is being designed from the ground up, then the previous methods are limived to what can be used, particularly from earlier mods and projects.

As long as access can be gotten from all players with the right tools, all bases should be accessable for all players, after death or during play. this will make for some interesting play.

I can only dream of the new engines capabilities as we have nothing really concrete to work from (If engine was released the community would jump and play) Perhaps in time we can get a deeper look into it. My fear is if rocket wants to do underground bases (Or mines, Bunkers etc.) he might break the game and perhaps drop idea or start again with coding (Hopefully it's all in the engine now)

Here are some more in depth looks at the cave, underground work being carried out before.
