Settings 'myths'?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I have spent alot of time looking into how to get the best out of my machine (the term computer seems somewhat generous) and have come across all sorts of information, mostly similar, that has resulted in good performance boosts.

The one thing however that I have neeever manage to find confirmation on, is a couple of the details settings in game. I seem to remember object detail being the biggest hit, and one where the best option to max out your fps is to have it at its lowest, but everywhere I go I come across posts in threads etc. where people talk in very uncertain terms that they have heard that some settings if put on very low/low will no longer be calculated by the graphics card and will instead be processed by the CPU. If this is the case I would love to know about it, as with an old non-overclockable dell E7300 I think this is likely to be the worst part of the machine given how CPU intensive dayz is.

So yeah, can anyone confirm or deny these rumours without terms such as "i heard" and "i think"? lol would be well appreciated.

Yes that is true how ever I cannot confirm which settings in particular that is affected by this or which settings you should use to get best performance.

AA and then shadows are the only things that have a noticeable effect on my FPS, everything else is negligible. No idea if that's the same for others but that is my personal experience.

Hmm cool, cheers guys. Never had AA turned on, but shadows are something ive wrestled with a bit...definitely a big knock on fps then?

I always used to have them on low as I was worried about missing out on atmosphere in the game, but to be honest the more ive played with it the more ive found that low res blocky shadows actually detracts more than it adds. Might stick with shadows off for good, dont think ill notice after a few days!

With that said, am I probably good then to stick with something like this: Objects and terrain detail on high, Shadows off, AA off, AF on high. Again, main worries is any settings that will push weight onto the cpu. So yeah, if so I reckon I should be safe with this anyway?

Its a terrible computer. E7300 dell non overclockable and a GTS 250...eugh. Whole rig needed sometime soon enough

"Texture detail - Self explanatory. The higher this setting is the more memory your GPU needs, doesn't have much effect on performance if you have a good graphic card. Whatsoever, it is recommended to use higher setting if your GPU is newer than your processor as GPU's RAM memory module and onboard CPU will handle load-render processes better. Lower setting textures are basically processor backed compressed textures. So what you do when you play on Low settings is force your processor to re-compress data on the go in order for your game to use less RAM memory (GPU and local) If your CPU is newer yet you need performance gain, use lower setting, if your GPU is newer than processor use higher setting, however make sure you have good amount of RAM for both GPU's (1 GB recommended) and local (2 GB recommended) Other options depend on this setting. Affects graphic card RAM the most."

Ahh amazing link thank you. Everything ive wanted to know! I get as much fun out of trying to tweak dayz to run well as I do playing it lol

Really hope I get a few extra fps with the GTS250 replacing my 8800gts(320). Unless my processors gonna be flagging behind. At least I can give it a better tweaking about now, cheers :D
