Night time should be toned down

IMO nights, flashlights, NV goggles, flares, ect... are all fine currently.

I don't really agree - the lighting may be somewhat realistic, but it really depends on the server time. While at 11pm it's ok, at 3am it IMO it is pitch dark- too dark. Also, IRL you can "feel" objects, you know when you've hit a wall or something, and get your bearings from that,you know when you've made a turn because there was something in front of you just because you felt it.

I don't think there is a feasible way to replicate the touch feeling in game, so if you could see like very basic shapes of objects 3 feet in front of you even in total darkness would be some sort of a compromise.

And if you run full sprint in total darkness the character should stumble/trip occasionally...

Definitely not. Night time is possibly the best time as it really changes the perspective of everything and makes you play entirely different. SA should lose the NVGs and just have a few different lights that can be obtained.

Torch : As it is.

Police Torch: These are extremely bright and obviously much better for visibility.

Same engine, same problems...it's not like TOH is an entirely different engine. They could have made the helo tweaks for ArmA 2 as well but they wanted to make an extra buck...

That doesn't mean they can't improve lighting or night time.

/Oh and:

Today Mario (one of our lead artists) had committed the lighting changes... beautiful! Pics tomorrow with tumblr post

So we maybe can see some improvements already today.

As for the torches shining through walls it's a problem in many games. It's not easy to fix because light/shadow calculation is probably the most taxing work your graphic card is doing.

I think the night time in game is perfect and loads of fun. I do wish they would maybe add head torches tho a civilian one (no filter white light) and a military one (red filter). They would need to be more rare than a handheld torch because the headtorch frees up your hands to hold any weapon, just a thought.

They just need to fix the lighting system for the whole flashlight thing to work.

A flashlight doesn't work like it does in game.

It sucks.

If it were to be more realistic (lighting-wise) I wouldn't have a problem playing in the dark.

In fact, I would love it.

But the lighting system as of now is...

Ew.

I would love to be able to see at least a few feet infront of my face than nothing, if that can be done then we're getting closer to 'genuine realism'. Also, i can hold a freaking flashlight still while i run, if that could be changed it would be simply amazing. Also i think u already can get blinded by flashlights. And those people who turn their gamma up during nights so they can see better? Well stop complaing whats realistic or not because in the real world, i cant flick a switch on the back of my head to help me see better in the dark

anyone mentioned banning "nvg’s" ... i have a couple of characters equipped with them and some without, which enables me to play both night time scenarios as far as light is concerned. it wouldn’t bother me if they were banned and it would put everyone on a level playing field... and maybe toning down the pitch blackness a bit would encourage more populated night servers?

The game doesn't even spawn you on a level playing field you spawn with bandages lol this game is not supposed to be competitive its about survival and to survive you don't play fair.

I fully agree with the OP. It's great that arma tries to be realistic (it's a simulator after all), but they have overdone the night lighting or I should say the lack of lighting. It still needs to be playable at night without NVG you know (it's a game on a PC monitor and not real life) and thats not the case with arma and thus dayz.. Sure you can drop a flare or start a campfire so that everyone on the server can se where you at, but I rather not :) They really should add a filter to the night lighting or script it so that the night time wont actually go beyond seven o clock in the evening and then stay that way till it gets morning again.

I am for it, NVG's are to military and not like a simple civilian bloke that tries to survive with cans of beans, in the logic of having nvg's I should also be able to loot 3 course gourmet dinners as well that keeps me alive for at least a day without eating.

And as for dayz not designed to be a level playing field is one of the strong points of the mod (soon to become official game), but, I do think it needs to be based on the skills of the players and not the fact if you have uber weapons and triple A military gear like nvg's and rangefinders. It should be based on the player tactical and strategic skills and how steady his aim is in QCB and not just because he has a grenade launcher or a bad ass sniper rifle able to kill players 1km away. I don;t mind getting killed by someone that was just better and quicker or used better tactics, I do mind lame launchers and uber weapons. For that matter I also think helicopter gunships should be removed and only have civil choppers. Though i think for a simple survivor to be able to fly choppers is also a tat unrealistic and not needed in Dayz.

I'd love to see the night stay the way it is. Just remove nvg and thermals from the game and fix flashlights. When someone can use a couple items in the game to not just gain an advantage, but an insurmountable advantage its just breaking the game. I always laugh when people cry 'don't try to make me play the game the way you want me to play', well I feel the same way.

I don't think anybody complaing about night time would have played a full session more than once or twice. There is lot of diversity in night time and there is a "cycle" of sorts, be it cloud cover or a random moon. Night is not one shade of dark, it changes in brightness, usally when there is no cloud cover.
