Ideas for Hunting/New Equipment for Standalone

On the picture you've got a deadfall trap, snare (as also is in the description) looks like this

Just remove the "humane" part from the text and you'll be good

As a side note, traps in IRL take a good time to actually catch something, they're checked every 12hours or more, how would you implement the waiting time, i cant imagine peps to wait and chech the traps continuously...

I mean who actually knows how they would work that out. All i know is that i would be using the snare to booby trap my base camps. You make a really great point though who wants to wait.

The 'humane' sentence has been removed.

I was referring to traps being a part of DayZ, not in real life :) I don't think we've been into the wilderness of Russia to know how long we would wait for our traps to succeed. It definitely shouldn't be based in real time or that'd ruin the whole concept of the trap, rendering it useless. The baits in DayZ should give out a description of how the radius would be for the scent of the trap to attract animals.. This could go both ways as in an animal could see you as a threat and strike or just carry on it's business and fall for the trap.

I love this game and yes I believe the hunting/gathering should be worked on. Flyfishing!!! Yes I want it.

Being a man from the dense forests of Norway I want to point out that the forest is not varied enough. The dimensions of trees and their density in the wild follows a quite defined mathematical rule. The forests in Chernaurus are examples of "perfectly" cultured forests where all trees are of the same age. The forest is exclusively grade A, prime forest ready to cut.

The bear trap we have now could be used?Was thinking that you can lay them down all over certain areas of map that you mark off on your map.Then you can make a run to see if anything has spawned in the trap.

How could I forget about that? I could see it being more practical for hunting and keeping predators away from your camps or your surroundings. I won't be adding that on because it's not a new feature :)

A bow or spear would work as a weapon and fishing rods could take up space as a primary just as the flash liht acts as a primary

Don't be Homeless! Think out the box.

Tree houses. I was thinking of them lately since as a child i had build one of them with my father in my house yard.

With great efford you could build one of them. You would need a ladder, ropes, alot of chopped wood, nails, hammer.

You could possibly camo them too so it would not be that much of an obvious.

Barrel on Fire

Instead of a fireplace you could store some barrels that would only be stored in vehicles so you can fill them with chopped wood and set them on fire. You would need obviously the barrel (maybe open and closed. That would force the player to have a toolbox so he can open the top) some gasoline or a jerry can and 4 piles of wood. That would provide warmth indoors safely without a fireplace. The same could apply to a metal bucket that could be carryed by survivors.

Tree houses wouldn't really help out much because there are deer stands, I just think it's better to leave it as is.

For fire barrels, it can be seen in areas such as Cherno. I believe that fire barrels could be expanded around areas that suffer a lot of poverty due to homelessness prior to the apocalypse which could give us a brief description about some areas.. Adding some fuel from a jerry can could probably help ignite the flame and make it last longer, especially around cold/rainy conditions.

would be cool if you could take a trip in one of the boats out on the ocean and catch a realy big fish, or just relax trying to catch one.

I dont think it should be to easy to get good ones, and a good variety of arts and sizes would be cool.

I agree. Along with being able to 'grenade fishing' in a lake by lobbing a grenade in a lake, which could give you a lot of fish but would take up a lot of resources; making fish able to respawn upon a 6 hour rate perhaps if that was the case.

Fishing is one of the things I always been interested in. Having boats and you can't fish out the ocean? That's absurd :P Along with that, comes with tough weather conditions such as getting sea sick and the wind-chill factor but I'm not going to get side tracked with that.

I like the idea, but I'm afraid that if the construction of these little shelters was allowed we'd soon have the same issues as we had with the barbed wire: server load, people trolling by blocking buildings with them, etc.

We'll see with the Standalone. Things will be totally re-designed to prevent things like that :)

More about the placeable shelters:

The reason Wasteland had construction options available is because the devs of the mod completely ignored the fact that allowing players to place items around the map would lag the server down. Considering that the SA servers are going to support much more people than the mod servers, so allowing unlimited construction and placement of items isn't an option. Here's a quote from Matt Lightfoot:

Q: Have you ever thought about taking things from Wasteland such as missions?

A: We want to have something for players to do as sort of an end game, the problem is how can we do that within server limitations. Wasteland has base building but because that is done above ground it means an ever increasing number of items are saved to the server which eventually starts to lag down the server. It's really how we achieve an end-game without affecting everything else. We have spoken about instanced underground base-building as an idea and that's something we are yet to decide on, so like on Skyrim you've got your main land and when you go into a dungeon there is a separate loading time for that, it's a separate world space which would eliminate the problem with items. That's one idea but it's not something we are going to be looking at until the second half of the year really.

Personally I'm against instancing because of the fact that you cannot in any way sense what is going on outside the instance, even if you are standing just next to the entrance. A bomb could go off and you wouldn't be able to hear it because of the loading screen between you and the explosion. Not ideal for a game like DayZ, actually quite bad. Skyrim is a single player game, so it kinda works there, but it has never been done successfully in a multiplayer game that has map-wide PvP.

Hi your OP was very good i think it should make itself into the game but im no game dev :) For ideas for hunting well you pretty much covered everything for players useing hunting equipment. Why dont you suggeset on how you can use animals to help you hunt like dog hunting and falaconary maybe. Mention some of the tools/items that you would need like if your dog was hunting boar it could use this speical type of vest for your dog to protect it from the boars tusks and maybe gun shots. Good idea :) I heard that animals will actually be smarter in the Standalone. Dogs in the mod were actually suppose to track animals for you to hunt but for it being in the Standalone would be better.

I would like to bring up an idea about protecting your dog. Like getting a vest for a bit more protection against attacks

I noticed there has been birds flying around pretty often in Chernarus and able to shoot them. What if we could gut their meat and use it for food as well?

Each animal should come with some type of disease from their bacteria since most wild animals are dirty. Eating it raw would be potentially fatal or get you very sick.

More techniques include Falconry and using dogs for hunting would be great too :)

I think with crafting being involved, I'd definitely like to have an option to make these items by scratch.
