help disabled gamer

Recommended Posts

first let me say that I have an injury from an IED that prevents me from properly using a keyboard and mouse for a FPS game, I can use the mouse but the WASD keys are to hard for me to use properly so I usually use a gamepad because its easier, I do have some trouble with the trigger but its not as hard as the keyboard

so dont start telling me that gamepads suck and use a keyboard and mouse because I will say this again - I have a disabality from an IED attack in my left hand so I cant properly use the WASD keys

my problem is that the gamepad support is strange with this game (yea its actually arma 2 but maybe this mod can help by "modding" something) I cant remap keys I dont understand why is there something that I can edit to allow me to remap the buttons

Hello there

I'm a gamepad user too. No issues here remapping. Which one do you have?

In the main Arma menu you can re-map your keys there. Not sure if that's what you mean but I hope it helps :)

Out of curiosity when you mean gamepad do you mean controller? played with both Keyboard + mouse and Controller since I was 4 :)

One has the choice of remapping keys in arma to suit the gamepad's default or (if they are not recognised) remapping the gamepad to suit arma's keys using it's own softeware.

if you can't get it to work using the settings in the menu consider using xpadder

xpadder.com

it works with the majority of gamepads windows detects

its the xbox 360 wired controller

yea there is an option to remap or configure the controller but nothing happens when I press it

I have xpadder and was going to try that but I hate going through all the work to set it up because there are always issues like not being able to toggle things like croutch to be hold or toggle

if I could just get the chatpad (the small keyboard for the xbox 360 controller) to work that would probably solve most problems but for some reason microsoft dont make drivers for it that are for windows and although there are a few out there I couldnt get them to work for me

I just was wondering if there is a config file or something like that I can edit that will let me remap the buttons

Ahhh, I assumed you meant a keyboard pad (nostromo/g13 etc) rather than a x-box controller. hmm. not my speciality I'm afraid, but this post will bump your thread. So, i'm helping in a small way.

as far as i know you can edit your profile and change binds (documents->arma2(or other profiles) and its yourname.arma2oaprofile.) you can open it in a text editor, but assignment is not very straight forward and you may have to dig around the forums or something to find the info you need

do you play with 1 hand on the gp and one on the mouse or both on the gamepad?

there are also some guides on creating macros that simulate button holds (if you'd like to make a hold-to-crouch macro try setting like this: on press -> keyboard 'x' -> on release -> keyboard 'c')so xpadder should be able to suit your needs if you're up for taking time to set it up

I have a friend that lost a few fingers so he plays one hand on a gamepad, one on a mouse.. he just bought a mouse with 12 buttons on the side, something else to consider that may make your life easier if you haven't already :)

Thanks to everyone who's helping Leftkidney with advice and tips. Come on guys, some of you out there must have some more specific advice on what to do? Am I right we're talking about ways to map keys to use xbox controller or mini-controller?

Maybe someone has a file they can share? Or some specific advice on where to start? It amazes me how much some of you guys know. I'm sure some of you can help. :beans:

I have been reading about using Xbox Controller for a computer before because I have always wanted to try it but I never really got around to even getting a controller that works for the computer, so I sadly don't know much about this.

I use a wired Xbox controller and there is a preset controller set up for it you just go to the escape key menu, settings, controls, controllers then disable then enable it as a controller with control scheme and it has a pretty good set up.

I find that I can't change the default configuration in game for the xbox pad either (not really helping I know but just to confirm I have the same issues).

Go to the controllers page and set it up as a controller without a scheme, then set the scheme up, as you probably have it set up as a controller with a preexisting scheme.

thanks for all the help, I think I am going to use xpadder after I program it the way I like, editing the config giles is what I have done in the past for a few games but this is a last resort and usually I have to get a "hacked" copy of the game just to be able to do this or it will just flag my game as stolen if I edit some files and the game wont play - I think that Homefront was like that, and maybe crysis 2, it had something to do with the "games for windows" thingie that would lock the gamepad controller to whatever they set it to

I simply dont understand why there isnt a few simple "rules" for making games, this is mostly for console games pc games usually let you edit everything untill this stupid "games for windows" came along - all game developers remember this

1. must have fully remapable controlls, even if it makes no sense to map them that way let me do it - also allow for adjusting the analog sticks dead zone and movement speed

2. must have full audio controll, as in allow me to turn the music off if I dont want to here it (COD I am talking about you) or adjust other audio sounds

3. must have full control over the brightness/contrast/gama controlls

if all games had these 3 things it would make gaming so much better, it should be required

I will post back when I figure out more and I get into the game more

I also think I need to build a new computer just to play this game (and crysis 3 when it comes out) I just ordered a ssd and hopfully that will make a difference, I got a asus p5w-dh deluxe - intel q6600 g0 - 8gb ddr2 ram - nvdia 660 2gb card - antec truepower quattro 850w

I've used Xpadder in the past and really liked it. A couple of years ago I managed to get my controller set-up pretty well in Arma2 OA for the Heli campaign using the Arma keybinding menu but i wouldn;t fancy wrestling with it for the usual controls so I hope you get it sorted.

There's a really simple reason - lack of awareness. The situation is rapidly improving but many game developers still simply haven't thought about gamers with disabilities, or suffer from the misconceptions that catering for them is expensive, difficult, and dilutes the proposition just to benefit a tiny percentage of players who aren't interested in gaming anyway.

Every one of those preconceptions is obviously completely wrong, it's all simple stuff that's cheap to do if thought about early enough, benefits all players whether they're disabled or not, but particularly the 20%+ of gamers who have a disability, who are actually more likely to be gamers than people without impairments.

As it's a case of awareness raising, you posting on this forum helps. Never be afraid to voice your issues, developers are generally a very nice bunch who will want to know if people are having problems with their game, and if it's something simple to fix they may even do it for you.

Dead Space for example had remapping patched in after a popular request by one single disabled gamer.

Luckily there are others who think the same, and are working on raising awareness, so things are getting better.

Take a look at http://www.gameacces...yguidelines.com, it covers the things you're asking for, and many more.

I've tried that but it didn't work that well.
