What about map editor?

Recommended Posts

I find it interesting that great maps like lingor island and fallujah were player created. I mean these maps are huge and yet there pretty detailed. If anyone could take a good guess and tell how long and how hard it is to make a decent map on DayZ when the standalone comes out that would be great. I'm thinking about making maps myself and I like the idea of balance on a map where no area is truly safe.

Lingor Island and Fallelujah didn't take more than a few months at most.

DayZ isn't two years old and those maps were doubtfully being worked on before DayZ came out.

Edit; Welp. No idea about that opinion anymore.

The code for DayZ SA will be locked down so it won't be moddable. Also Heretic is correct. Chernarus took 2 years to create.

Actually a decent Arma map usually can take about 6 - 8+ Months on your own and obviously if more devs take part in the creation it'll be a shorter time it also depends on if you're using custom assets or in game ones.

You do know all those maps were created for ARMA, not DayZ right? Take a look at BI forum threads for each map and how long it actually took to finish them.

I was not aware of that, actually. Never played on Fallelujah -- in DayZ or ARMA 2 -- and all I heard about Lingor Island is that it was third-party map that someone was able to put DayZ on. So to me it sounded like someone made the map post-release of the DayZ mod.

Also the size of the maps comes into play

chernarus is 15x15km

and if i am correct, most of the other maps are 10x10km (or 10x15km), in addition to having alot of water thus empty space

Yeah, none of the available maps were made for DayZ. It would be pretty cool to have a map built specifically for a zombie apocalypse game but that would take a long time which is why even the standalone will be on Chernarus. There's a guy making one but I think he's doing it all by himself, including new buildings and objects so it won't be finished any time soon.

Thanks guys, a lot of useful information from all of you. And who knows if anymore good maps will be put onto DayZ by the development team.
