colekern 1364 Posted January 11, 2013 This is, obviously, a suggestion for the standalone. My idea is to have an Alan wake-like system for opening doors, with some small modifications. In Alan Wake, to open a door, you just walk into into it. Your character puts your hand forward into the door as if he's pushing it the door open. It's a very simple system. I suggest that a more advanced form of this be implemented. Instead of just walking straight into the door and the same thing happening every time, what if you could open the door in a stealthy way? For example, what if you crouch-walked into the door, and you open the door silently gun still raised for attack? What if, when you sprinted into the door, you ram your body into it and burst it open? I also think the door opening button should remain so you could open the door without exposing yourself. You may be wondering why we would need to have an Alan Wake-ish door system when we would have a button. The idea is that you wouldn't have to stop to open the door. You could keep moving while opening the door. It would also allow you to break the door open by sprinting into it, or opening it steathily (is that a word?), or whatever.
Stalker in The Trees 5 Posted January 11, 2013 I like the Idea of this hope it gets in
PracticalTactical 164 Posted January 11, 2013 I agree, the door system needs to be completely redone. Its absolute garbage the way it is right now and I like what you suggest. Reminds me of Splinter Cell with the stealthy door opening and smashing in knocking the guy standing at the door on the other side unoncious.
chris_heyward 47 Posted January 11, 2013 I haven't played Alan Wake so I am unsure about the mechanic in question but if its anything like the "walk into it and it will open" with a slight hand gesture then I would disagree with your post.If its as simple as that, then zeds can just walk right in. Zeds shouldn't be clever enough to open doors. Maybe if Rocket gave that mechanic the animation to actually opening the door while using the handle then yes I would agree

With an animation, you, have to stand in a very specific spot for it to look right. With this, it's less detailed, but much more dynamic and free.
DemonGroover 8836 Posted January 11, 2013 Sounds interesting. I like the idea of opening doors in different ways, silently, or bursting through them.
chris_heyward 47 Posted January 11, 2013 Sounds interesting. I like the idea of opening doors in different ways, silently, or bursting through them.I do like the OP's idea about that and if it gets put into standalone, there should be another addition added. The chance that the door will squeak when opening slow. Not all doors. Just say 20% of them make a creaking or squeaking noise when opened fast or slow. This will alert the survivor/bandit inside or outside to your presence and maybe the odd zombie/infected

Very Ape 748 Posted January 11, 2013 With stealth being such a big part of the game, players should be able to do this.
Khoysta 17 Posted January 11, 2013 Yes to the alan wake door mechanic. Except doors in AW swing both ways to aid in fast door opening while running from the taken.
