Do I have to play through Steam?

My steam is broken, everytime I login my computer crashes so, Can I get Arma II without steam and would it still work to play Dayz with it? Thanks

Go to the Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead directory

(default: program files > steam > SteamApps > common > Arma2 operation arrowhead)

Right-click and edit the "_runA2CO_beta.cmd" file.

Search for ":run" near the end of the file.

Add ";@dayz" without quotes to "-mod=%_ARMA2PATH%;EXPANSION;ca".

Run "_runA2CO_beta.cmd" and enjoy playing!

You may create a new shortcut to "_runA2CO_beta.cmd"

I can't recall if I had the .cmd file already in my directory as it's been months since I set this up. If you do and once you add the @dayz to the proper line, this will launch DayZ for you when you double click it. I created a shortcut to the cmd file and dropped it on my desktop for quick use. I exclusively play the game this way.
