So my CD Key was stolen...

Recommended Posts

Not a big deal, I'm definitely not lacking in cash or anything, but I just want to know how I should go about buying a new CD key. Where should I buy it, and is there anything that I should do before I buy it to ensure that my key isn't just stolen again? Thanks guys.

If you want to be dead certain you don't have it stolen again, reinstall windows. Then you can safely replace the cd-key.

Dumb ass for getting your key stolen.. Do not buy a new key from "***" websites, or do and see what happens.

I don't see how it makes him a dumb ass. He never said how it was stolen. For all you know he got a DayZ addon from a dodgy site, or even a friend on his computer.

Even if he was trying to get hacks and he got his key stolen (In which case that is quite stupid of him), that's not what the thread is about. He's asking about replacing his CD-key safely. The penalty for hacking is to pay for a new CD-key, and he's willing to pay that penalty. So even in the worst case scenario, he's already been punished.

Thanks for the helpful reply.

Calm down, bud. I don't hack, nor have I ever tried. I honestly have no clue how it was stolen. Sometimes my younger brother comes to my house and I let him play on my PC. He might've done something.

To sum up then, you need to buy Arma again.

Regarding having your key stolen: Never download files from sources that you don't trust 100%. Never let someone else (your Brother) play with your computer unless you know he won't get your key banned by hacking or downloading dodgy stuff.

Oldest excuse in the book.

Please, if you don't know the situation don't jump to conclusions.

Yeah I'll definitely have a talk with him. Should I buy it off of Steam again or should I buy it off the BI website?

How come every single time someone is global banned, they claim it was their little brother?

Just don't hack and you won't be banned.

Does everyone claim that? Well maybe it's true. I know I have never tried hacking and I never would. I honestly don't care if you believe me, but it's the truth.

I know how it feels to get your key stolen. I got mine stolen by downloading a program that was suppose to increase my FPS.

You should buy the game again off steam.

If you're gonna buy it again get it from Steam and make your brother pay for it.

90% of the support tickets I read that are about global bans say "I haven't played in months, I come back now and I'm miraculously banned."

I find it pretty funny how almost everyone is posting here about their thesis on how your CD-key was stolen, as if OP cares. Telling him not to hack in the likelihood it was that which stole his key doesn't answer his question.

Back on topic, I think that the best thing you can do is:

1. Back up all of your important non-ARMA files onto an External hard-drive.

2. Do a clean install of Windows.

3. Set your antivirus to do a daily boot-scan. This will make sure you won't get a second one.

4. Slap your brother. Tell him never download anything without letting you know first. If he doesn't comply, password-protect your computer.

You need to use reg-edit to delete your old CD key and then use a new steam account to buy Arma 2.

No need for a windows reinstall.

But it will get stolen again.

The CD-key stealer apparently goes right through most antivirus programs. You don't even need regedit to replace your CD-Key. Just run the game as Admin.

It kinda sounds like you don't even know the situation.

It is the oldest excuse in the book, regardless of whether what you said it true or not.

It might not even be dayz related. If you download any form of virus/trojan/backdoor they have access to everything.

I would be formatting and reinstalling windows before I do anything if I was you.

Although this is the same story we hear every day, "my little brother plays on my computer, it was probably him", what you need to do is go into your documents, or your 'my games' folder, and find the ArmA 2 and ArmA 2 OA folders within there. Delete all of these folders, and buy arma 2 again.

If you do not delete these folders, you'll start your game up again, only to have your new CD key banned instantly
