New Player considering DayZ, what are your opinions?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I was totally into the idea of this zombie survival game and was about to buy ARMA when I found out about WarZ... well it didn't quite turn out as I thought it would. SO what I am wondering from the experts is: How do you like DayZ?

I've heard a lot about DayZ is full of hackers and from my own research it does look like it has a bit of a learning curve. Could anyone make any recommendations on if I should purchase the game/how you would recommend I start playing the game so I do not get turned off on a first impression?

Thank you.

WarZ is more of a team deathmatch/free for all style game. DayZ is more of a survival type. I believe from what i have heard WarZ has alot of hackers which make the game at times unplayable!

Trust me its getting worse. I was hoping WarZ would be more of a survival game than what it is. The more I play it the more I find myself just running around looking for people to kill. Do you have any suggestions for a new player?

Thank you.

Honestly, play the game your first life as if you were the character. Seeing everything for the first time, reaching points where the tension is almost too much, actually being afraid of the zombies, it's fucking fantastic. I would say don't watch veteran players on youtube until you've had your first few lives. LEARN your playstyle before you watch somebody else's. Also, WarZ isn't worth it at the moment. Hackers are worse there than in DayZ, plus the game is janky as fuck

Also, look up the basic controls before you start playing. DON'T learn anything about how the game works. Learning the rules of the world as you go is an experience worth having

It's not completely full of hackers, but there are a few. They tend to pop up when a server gets near capacity though and can be a real setback. As for the game though, been playing since thanksgiving and I love it. there's the standard alpha/mod glitches but with a bit of practice you learn to ignore them or work around them (Some maps, especially lingor and panthera have doorways that are complicated to navigate, but the tradeoff is that they are two of the best maps outthere. word of advice if you play, trust no one that you haven't met for at least a week of constant talking or run into at least once before in a meeting that didn't end in one of you shooting the other. The risks are a lot higher in Dayz than Warz. There's no global inventory and unless you find a camping tent or a vehicle, it's pretty much whatever you can carry. The emphasis in this game isn't the killing, it's the survival.

its getting used to the arma 2 control setup that can be a bit daunting , but it is well worth it.

dayz is awesome!i've not played the war z , but i've seen reviews from people who play both , and dayz comes out a winner every time.

if you get it through steam , i believe arma 2 CO is on sale now , so grab it and give it a try.since your in the forums , look for people to play with and introduce you to the game to ease your transition.plus i highly recommend doing the arma 2 boot camp , just to get familiar with the unique control system.

don't forget that you also get arma 2 , an incredible game in its own right.

don't be stress about learning to much and remember its just a game.

have fun and stay low!

Thanks for the great advice. I think some things id like to learn the "easy way" are: Do items travel with you from server to server? Or should I find one server and stick to it? Also would you recommend private servers?

Any server that isn't a private hive has linked inventories. While private hives are separate from anything else and aren't connected to each other or the main servers. I would recommend a good private hive

Sounds good. I just purchased ARMA II, Octagon you twisted my arm when you said it was on sale :) It's getting a little late here but I guess tomorrow I will look into learning the controls and then finding a good server :)

WarZ turned out to just be a cash-in on DayZ so expect pretty much the same content just much, much more rich and realistic, and with multiple much larger maps. And with a good, dedicated dev. The game does get boring after you spend a few months playing it, at least imo, simply because at this point the content is very limited because of its alpha stage and mod restrictions. However there is a good amount of objectives you can make for yourself, such as fix up a car, set up a camp, hunt for survivors/bandits, hunt animals, get to this specific place and loot it, even make a group or clan and conduct raids on other bands of players. Not much from a pure number of things to do standpoint, but the experiences you get doing these things are what makes it so amazing.

For the amount of money I spent on it (18 bucks on steam right now) If I get 1.5-2 months i'll be very happy. I mean 18 bucks will get a movie ticket, pop corn, and a drink.. and that only lasts 2.5 hours tops.

give the boot camp in arma 2 a go first and you'll feel a lot more confident with navigating the world.after that , the rest is what you make of it.it is a true roll playing game , as in you can play the way you want to but remember , other people will pay differently and just like in the real world you might not see eye to eye with every one.

where are you located?maybe a fellow countryman could suggest a local private hive.

this is our private hive (chernarus map) : 77.40.215.196 2320

you can search it in dayz commander under : OSL Private

it is in norway , but i assume you are in a different time zone as you commented that it was "getting a little late" and it is 10.30 in norway atm.

there are lots of helpful people in the forums so don't hesitate to ask for help , or search for a helpful thread.

enjoy!

I guess its too late now cause you already bought it but to anyone else who wants to buy CO, go to http://www.greenmangaming.com/, if you use the 30% off code (found in the hit deals tab I believe) then you can add a 30% discount to the current 50% discount making it only £10.50 here in the UK. But the deal ends 3rd Jan so only a few days left anyone who wants to get the mod before standalone.

Well, if you wan't to see the truth about WarZ, and the current state of gameplay, zombies and other players:

You should never have given your money to a shoddy game development, and nobody ever should. As it currently stands, WarZ deserves little attention and no money from consumers, hence it's removal from Steam and abuse from gaming critics worldwide. A rip off and a total failure of a game.

well i realy enjoy dayz, compared to warz you just feel so much more engaged, like some shoots at you in warz it like "wow i know where they are and they are shooting at ma" but dayz actually feels like your there, you fear for your self and just it so sweet.

also its not like cod and stuff where when you die you just respawn and charge agian, in this every time you die you lern somthing new and as a player you improve from it

bottom line i love it and would highly reccomend it over warz to anyone :)

Yeah I live in the US but thank you, I appreciate your help! I'll definitely be checking out the Boot Camp before playing DayZ.

To be honest, I did enjoy WarZ at first. I've never played a game like that before and I did get intimidated the first few times I was shot at. I used to be one of the guys on the forums who said "I never see any hackers, I dont know what you guys are talking about." However, now it's a whole different story. It's gotten to the point where I pull a rifle out of my global, run around, kill some people, get killed - be minus one rifle. Rinse and repeat. It got old and the fear of dying was completely gone.

Dayz all the way! I'm new but learned controls by joining a private hive and asking a lot of questions. I got killed twice but made about 3 friends by bloodbacks lol.

If you want a really good view/enjoyment of the game, join some private hive! You'll enjoy it!

My advice? Wait for DayZ standalone. Better controls, infinitely better hack protection, less bugs, and more features(eventually).

Also, how bad is WarZ? I know some people who want it and I'm trying to talk them out of it.

So many things, man... it looks and runs absolutely horrible, it has some of the worst animations of any game I have played in the last 5 years, there are so many bugs in this game it makes Skyrim look like the most bug/glitch free game ever created. You can die by literally stepping down a hill. Hackers? Imagine DayZ multiplied by 10 (so much for Sirgay's hack-proof anti-cheat engine). There is extremely little to do; no vehicles, only one map that's tiny, it takes at least 6-10 shots with a hammer to the head to kill just one zombie... God, I could go on and on. The thing is, even if this game was amazing and awesome, I still wouldn't get it because the devs are lying, censoring assholes that couldn't care less about their community and game. I mean, micro-transactions? What the fuck is the point of a survival game when you could just head to the store and buy a bunch of food, water, and medical supplies? Not to mention they make you wait 4 hours to play on a character again and the skills/money system is completely useless now anyway so there's no point in keeping a character, except for when you hit the cap on how many you can make. Just a godawful game with asshole devs. Pathetic excuse for a cash-in.

War Z is shite. Bought it in October, and I know about reget (better to regret something you haven't done than someting you have) but really its a poor imitation pile of wank.

Spawn and die within 15 seconds.

Poor graphics.

Unfriendly community of embarrassing arseholes.

There seems ot be a 40 point I.Q.gap between players of Dayz and WarZ (the upper percentile will understand that lol)

Personally I'm with Bakunin, the destructive urge is the creative urge, we will build upon the ashes of the capatalist monster lolololol x i hope

still drunk lol

happy new fear

This post appears a bit biased but he does have some good points. The developing team isn't the greatest (to say the least). There are a TON of hackers. I know there is the argument where "It's not a hacker! You just suck!"... but no they really are hackers. I'd say a good 40% of people i've died from were hackers. The gameplay does get a bit dull. There isn't much to do once you have a sizable inventory stash (global inventory: allows transfer of items to other characters and servers) except pvp.. which gets old too. Micro-transactions are pretty dumb but IMO after you buy something with real money you lose it quickly enough anyway from some bandit team, so what's the point? Overall I wouldn't recommend getting it until it's had more time to develop (if it even does).

edit: spawn time is 1 hour after death - not 4. Hammer takes 3-4 hits in the head to kill a Zombie or a player. There IS one tiny map.
