Smg or pistol

For non silenced guns, is it best to have an smg as your back up gun? Or if I find a pistol, I take that instead?

I think most people will agree your secondary weapon should be picked base on how many bullets it can hold. Damage is so negligible with pistols you are trying to focus on headshots. I never liked the PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) basically the uzi, not sure what you mean by SMG, but I assume you mean PDW. seen here http://www.dayzwiki.com/wiki/PDW

I prefer the G17 due to the size of the clip, all pistols do 800ish damage so like i said it doesn't generally matter. Do you already have a PDW? use it and test it for yourself. The one thing that is neat about the PDW is the fact you can use MP5 mags for it which are fairly common, sadly tho it takes your main inventory for it.

I find the Glock is the best for being the most common since it can take any of the actual 9x19mm pistol magazines, even the sub-sonic rounds for the M9SD allowing you to shoot zombies without pulling agro. It also has a flash light which can pay for itself when looting at night.

But I will drop my Glock for an M9SD any day of the week.

did you even read the wiki i linked?

The PDW is a Sidearm. it uses many magazines which fires 9mm ammo. So if you run out of PDW ammo, you can use other 9mm sidearm ammo such as the G17 and M9. You can also use MP5 ammo even tho it is a primary weapon the PDW will accept the ammo for it...

M9SD is only worth it if you have ammo for it. Its weak and innacurate, but does not make much noise so I suppose it is a trade off. If I were to take a secondary, a PDW, G17 or revolver would be the best choice. PDW and G17 can use PDW mags, G17 mags, M9 mags and the SD counterparts (I think) so ammo is always available. Revolvers do good dammage and are accurate, plus the ammo for them is common. The most overlooked secondary is the Makarov which is actually a very good gun because its small, ammo is everywhere and the sights on it are quite good when in close quarters, which is where you would be using a pistol and not using one any more than say 50 meters.

G17 all day long. It's laser accurate and you really cannot beat the flashlight when you have no NVGs. It's ammo is also very common.

The PDW takes all the mags the g17 can take plus the 20 round PDW mags. And it is fully automatic.
