Direct Communication is Broken!

I have seen this issue brought about but I have seen no answers...

I have been playing DayZ for months and I haven't been able to see what anyone else says. I know you have to switch channels, use /, have to be close, blah blah blah I'm not a noob, I just don't know why it isn't working. I can talk to people in Global and in Vehicle chat, but not in direct. I know people are talking to me and can see what I say because I play with a friend and I can't see what he says, but he sees what I say. He is doing everything correctly too, but for some reason no one can see what I say.

The servers I have played on do not because my friend can see what I say.. but I can't see what he says and he talks with other people on the same server
