Varasalvi 0 Posted December 18, 2012 (edited) My problem with vehicles comes down to two words, "Cap" and "Clans". The vehicle cap on servers is too low, and the vehicles that are on the servers are usually sitting in a clan base somewhere along with many other vehicles. These clans collect and hog most of the vehicles that are available. You can't change how clans act, they should be able to collect vehicles and keep them for them selves, that only leaves one option: More vehicles. But i don't think vehicles should that common either, it sort of takes the fun out of it.I remember months back when i was playing with a group of friends, we had been playing almost non-stop for days. We had a pickup and 4 ATV's. When we went out of our base we took all the vehicles and drove in a convoy, the pick up infront and the ATV's following in line, our vehicles were stock full of weapons, and so were we. Just driving like that was amazingly fun, but i don't think it would've been that fun had we not have to work for it, this convoy was a medal of our hard work and i think that's what made it so special.Don't get me wrong though, i think finding vehicles is too hard, and even if you find one and it's damages, repairing it can take forever. But it can't be too easy either. There needs to be a middle ground. Our base with all our gear and vehicles was eventually attacked, we were there to defend it but after 1 and a half hour of fighting, we lost. It was night and i'm pretty sure they had the L85. We were 6 against 2 (i think), but we lost. After 3 of us had died, we decided to take the vehicles and as much gear as we could and bail. We managed to save 2 vehicles and some gear. Loosing that sucked, but that was part of the fun. Edited December 18, 2012 by Varasalvi
bfisher 561 Posted December 19, 2012 I wonder if anyone else, like me, usually leaves the vehicles they come across in favour of travelling on foot? I prefer hiking, it draws less attention and you don't miss anything on the way so if I find a vehicle I usually check it out but leave it anyway. Maybe to shorten travel time to the next ville I'll borrow it but for me more vehicles on a map probably wouldn't make a lot of difference....more bikes, however, then we'd be talking!IMHO, it creates some new tactical considerations. I like the speed and mobility, but I might stash the vehicle so I can approach on foot with stealth. Or I might want to roll in fast, get what I need, and roll out.Personally I'd rather find the occassional working vehicle and maintain it than have to spend days scrounging up the parts. But that's me. I work and only have a few hours every couple of days to play. I agree too many is stupid. I just joined one server with 1400 vehicles. Balota Airfield looked like the entire 82nd Airborne Division was deployed there. Except all of the helicopters were broken. Plus the server was super laggy. So I basically shot a bandit in the face and logged off.
hatfieldcw 184 Posted December 19, 2012 I play on a server with 85 or so vehicles, and I rarely see one, because they're all hoarded up in the lousy woods. I'd rather see a server with a normal number of behicles but a 24-hour timer to reset them, so if you don't use a vehicle for a day, it gets dropped back at its normal spawn point. A team would have no trouble maintaining and keeping a vehicle or two, and a solo player could fix one up and drive it around all weekend, but you can't have a Ural parked in your Pobeda campsite all week so you can use it on Saturday and Sunday to store the chopper loot you collect with your motorcycle. Also, bicycles should get reset every time the server restarts.
spliff (DayZ) 24 Posted December 19, 2012 Actually they rule.Seriously, who wants to spend hours running from Kamenka to...anywhere else? The maps are so big your chances of encountering someone away from the coast or the NWAF are pretty small. And why make vehicles so rare that anyone who actually puts one together then hides it forever off the edge of the map?because this is DayZ. BlksnshN 127 Posted December 19, 2012 I play on the GreyZ server and I love it. 100+ vehicles. Hiking simulator gets old very fast.
forgotten 1 Posted December 21, 2012 I believe more cars add to the atmosphere, but 1400 is a little silly. My server has around 400 vehicles. 105 of them are bicycles. The vast majority of the rest are sedans, vans, pick-ups, motorcycles, and atvs. The remaining 40 are divided up amongst Ural-type trucks, some Humvees with mounted weapons, UAZs with mounted weapons, and Pickups with mounted weapons. And then only three helicopters. The vast majority of my players love the amount of vehicles, as it ends up being 3-4 per small town, with the larger towns holding the vast majority of the vehicles. How I handle clans and hoarding on my server is every Monday vehicles get reset back to their original spawns. This excludes both the Ural type trucks and tents. Players get to keep their "base" of operations, but have to continually spend that time on transportation that simulates both wear and tear and the unpredictability of living in a persistant world. This also pushes those cushy clans to go out and do something other than PvP bambis. And this ensures that new spawns and players have a chance to drive around in something. This is, of course, my opinion, having ran my server for the past four months. Heiduk 265 Posted December 21, 2012 As the only limited resource in DayZ vehicle numbers should probably stay pretty low. What else is worth raiding camps or fighting over?More vehicles and less fuel would also be a good solution. Probably more realistic too. How many days after Hurricane Sandy did the NY Metro area start running out of fuel? All that being said, I don't particularly care, I'm with Jamz, generally preferring foot travel or the occasional bicycle tour.“Little boys love machines; girls adore horses; grown-up men and women like to walk.”--Edward AbbeyAlso...Rule #1: Cardio
BearGravy 53 Posted December 21, 2012 (edited) How about make jerry cans very rare, and make the gas at gas stations very limited. After like 3 refills you can't refill it until the game either resets or a certain time of day that is unknown to the player, and that each server has a different timer for when the gas can comeback. Because when you think about it once you pick up a jerry can you are good to go forever with a car, but making the fuel limited at gas stations might change things up a little.Or they might just be doing that already and I was late to hear. bfisher 561 Posted December 22, 2012 In my personal opinion i think more vehicles will make the game boring. To me having to scavenge the vehicle and the parts for it makes the gameplay! Its more realistic and adds hours more gameplay...The problem IMHO is that you have to spend so much time covering so much distance to find a vehicle AND all of the parts to make it run that it sort of defeats the purpose of it. You might as well just walk to wherever you were going to go with the vehicle in a fraction of the time it would have taken you to make it work. And at the end of the day, someone can just steal it when you are offline. Which is the whole reason people hoard them off the edge of the map and barely use them.Personally I find more common vehicle useage makes the game less boring. Especially at night. Couple of highlights:Driving a motorbike wearing NV goggles with the lights off. Saw a bambi running down the middle of the street with his flashlight. Beeped the horn as I zipped past and probably scared the shit out of him.Drive up to the warehouses near Kamenka. I'm searcing around for a jerry can when a survivor comes running in the door with a dozen agroed zombies behind him yelling "lets get the fuck out of here!!!". We run back to the car and get the fuck out of there. (I know the zombies were effectively trapped in the building because of the walking in building thing, but it was still funny). This afternoon, I don't know what the heck was going on, but a helicopter (am MI17 on a high vehicle server) landed in a field near the woods where I was walking. Then another (a Huey). I could see the crew get out, shining their flashlights and searchlights around as they conducted whatever operation they were performing. Then they flew away in the MI17. The Huey didn't have much fuel so I fure that's why they left it. I took off, figured out how to fly it in the air, then skidded it into the woods outside of Cherno (I survived). I felt bad for wrecking their bird, but finders keepers and I could have killed them from my observation point with my NV goggles and DMR rifle if I wanted to anyway. Vehicles mean constantly choosing between stealth and speed/carrying capacity. Everyone hears when a convoy rolls up into town. And they make the roads a lot more dangerous.
