M8EO 16 Posted December 2, 2012 Hey there,I quite enjoy sniping on DayZ, and I've looked into this mildot zeroing with the various different sniper rifles. This tells me how far above the target to aim with the DMR, or the range for me to set my zeroing on to hit them with zeroing snipers. However, i don't really need these mildots, as i've got a rangefinder, so zeroing my AS50 isn't a problem. What IS a problem, however, is that I can't hit a moving target for peanuts.I've noticed that there are mildots along the horizontal line of the crosshair as well as the vertical one. Bearing in mind that the vertical dots are for how far above the target to aim, surely the horizontal ones provide some sort of alternative aiming dot for moving targets? For example, if a target is running right, taking in account of the range, should i use on of the dots along the left side of the horizontal bar as an aim point? As in if i use this dot as an aim point on that target, it will be lined up perfectly for me to take the shot?Sorry if you don't understand me, but if you do, please help! Thanks in advance :)

Fitzkrieg 129 Posted December 2, 2012 First off, understand zeroing. If their about 300 meters away, zero to 300 and aim with dead center of cross hairs, if their further than 300 yet not 400 aim slightly higher to give leave to bullet drop, if their running, move the sights slightly infront of the direction they are running. Second, shoot then move. If you stay in one place for too long expect someone like me behind you with a doublebarrel shotgun with pellets loaded happy to shoot you, leave your gear and hide your body. Good luck out there and don't shoot the bambis.
M8EO 16 Posted December 2, 2012 What do you mean by horizontal? I know about the vertical dots, but im not sure about the horizontal ones

Like do the mildots work accurately horizontally aswell? Thanks :)

major.skrewup@gmail.com 177 Posted December 2, 2012 (edited) yes the mildots on the horizontal axis are for leading a target, they are accurate, there may be math involved that involes bullets travel time, travel speed of target and at great distance maybe the angle from you they are running (90 straight across or say 45degrees which you will have to compensate for at 1000 metresopen the arma 2 editor, place several fire teams of varying distance, set a waypoint of varying varies of variables and have them never fire, running at different speeds and different states of awareness, play with syncs or timers if u want them to run across 1 fireteam at a time and practise.... when you hit them all with ease your good enough to get an internet cookie, much better then learning on the fly in dayz.after your a master with the as50 die by hackers and never find one again Edited December 2, 2012 by Skrewy
sausagekingofchicago 4711 Posted December 2, 2012 Practice. Fire up the mission editor, drop in some guys you want to shoot, setup some waypoints for them to walk and run back and forth to, and blow their melons off. There is also a moving target range someone made for Arma2 but I wasn't able to get it to work. Maybe someone knows of a decent one.
puppetworx 474 Posted December 2, 2012 I've never used the horizontal mildots but I suppose you could. When it comes to moving targets I basically work off of timing, it takes a little practice (which can be done in the editor) but the good news is the AS50 is probably the easiest to learn due to it's zeroing ability and very high velocity rounds. You have to have an idea of how long it takes the bullet to cover the distance to the target and where the target will be at that point. It's actually not so hard, if you've ever caught a ball someone has thrown to you you've done essentially the same thing. All it takes is a little practice. Mildots? They will give you a rough guide to work off of but due to the huge differences in distance and velocity there are no set rules to give to you, it's all in the timing. Welch (DayZ) 756 Posted December 2, 2012 Personally, I don't pay attention to mildots if the gun's got zeroing. I go by my gut and almost every shot is either a hit or very close, though I don't snipe much.
Rage VG 4033 Posted December 2, 2012 (edited) That is what makes a sniper good. You need to predict where you think your enemy is going by their actions and context of the situation (If there are a load of zombies in one direction and they are running from them, assume that they are going directly away from the zombies, or if a bandit just killed a player and is heading towards the body, assume he is going to stop at the body to loot it) and aim for that.
