How do I put stuff in a backpack?

Stupid question I know, but how do I do this?

Press g to get into your gear, then double click your backpack picture/ icon.

If your not looking at any gear, you can transfer items to your pack. While looking at gear you can place things directly from the gear on the ground into your pack.

Plus make sure you're not looking at a loot pile while your managing your inventory. If so you will just be transferring stuff to/from the loot pile.
