Night time survival.

So, I know there have been a lot of threads like 'remove daylight 24/7 servers', but I have an OK solution!

What we need, is something that makes players WANT to play at night. I don't know what, but something.

Also, we need to have night time to have more tension, and be exciting. Maybe add some eerie street lamps in cities? Have floodlights scattered around, and lights fr buildings that turn on at night? Make it scary, make it exciting, make it enjoyable, but so it makes players poo their panties with horror at the same time!

Nowhere is safe. Paranoia is the key!

I remember the early days of 'Minecraft's development, night time was so exciting! People wouldn't just log on to a daytime server or whatever.

But also make night time harder. We don't want people logging on to night time servers that are empty, just to get a job done easier. Have stealthy zombies, or if more people are on night servers, people will feel more paranoid and uneasy!

I don't see the problem with night time, it is tense, it is scary and those are 2 good reasons to play right there.

Some nights have a full moon where it can be fine without NVG's or flashlights/flares etc, other nights are pitch black and you have to get the torch out. When I play at night i dump everything in a tent/vehicle except what I'll need to accomplish whatever my goals are for that session.

To make night time more popular you need to get rid of NVG's and Thermal scopes, make things better balanced, that's why a lot of folks stay away, cos there's little sense in risking it if you know there's a few squads/players out there who can see like it's daytime and you need to get the fucking Bat signal out just to see the fence you're banging your knees against.

Minecraft nights last no more than ten minutes whereas DayZ nights are real-time, so the comparison fails in reality.

Wabbit, thanks! I agree completely! This may sound silly but I don't have the game yet :P so I don't know how tense it is ^^ but yeah, getting rid of NVGs would balance it quite a lot!

Dr Duff, I wasn't trying to compare the 2, just saying how people (well, me at least) enjoyed playing night time! Doesn't seem that way in DayZ :3

Nighttime is very realistic actually. I used to whine about it being "too dark" especially when the gamma exploit didn't work but then I actually went outside a few nights in a row, clear without moon as well as clear with partial moon to see and judge for myself how realistic it was and I couldn't see shit away from any light source. Also considering this is an apocalypse setting the chances of streetlights coming on are slim to none unless someone goes and fixes the power plant.

Generator driven lights are a possibility I suppose but generators require fuel... I guess it could be implemented. There are also options in game to light up the area: fires, fireplaces, flares, chemlights, headlights of vehicles and so on.

I don't support removing items from the game to make it better balanced aka "more fair". Life isn't fair, get over it. There will always be someone better equipped than you, with better tactics than you, with better skills than you regardless of the items available in game.

I like playing at night, as it is, not knowing what's right in front of me is paranoia enough, not sure why we need more. And in all honesty, if by now you haven't soiled yourself at least once while playing, you're doing it wrong.

Tru dat ^ but this ain't about being fair, it's about making night time more popular, I love NVG's but sometimes I'd rather they weren't there so playing at night was like playing at night. I'm fine either way, I play at night with or without.

Anyway, how many sets of fully functioning NVG's and Thermal scoped rifles do you think are gonna be springing up after an apocalyptic event? i'm sure a few but I've played on white listed private hives (so no duping/importing) with 20+ players all sporting NVG's. and no one else stays on for long after the sun goes down. It may as well be daytime with everyone wearing green sunglasses.

You'd be surprised by how many average citizens have fancy things like that. They may not be as good as army issued items (though that needs to be proven) but it's still the same concept. There is also ways to make it horrible to play for people with NV on, such as fires, flares, headlights, etc.

As I said I'm sure there are a few out there.

And you're right to point out that there are ways to fuck with NVG wearing players, that's how I manage to get thru most night time engagements, but the fact remains that when the sun goes down most unequipped players log off and go in search of a GMT -7 server or whatever.

There are those of us that don't mind that some dudes have NVG's and relish the challenge of night time play, it would be better with more players though and for that to happen there needs to be some kind of change, I just repeat a well worn suggestion.

The average person playing with NVGs on a nightserver , probably only wants to do so , so they can kill other players .

Therefore , why would I want to play on a nightserver and put myself at a terrible disadvantage , against players who are probably not terribly friendly .

If NVGs were not so easy to obtain and/or each server was it's own hive , then this wouldn't really be much of a problem .

yep, if not do away with them altogether limit them drastically or maybe give the batteries a life of say a couple of hours, all suggested before but pertinent to this thread.

I disagree, I like night regardless of my equipment. I like it cos it's easier to get around zombies.

Private hive solves the problem of servers being their own hives. And I really like how people make it sound like you can find NV around every corner. I can honestly say I only ever have come across one pair of NV at a heli crash while looking for gear. Other than that I get them from other people's tents and vehicles so in theory other people find them for me. And I'm still trtying to find a set at the moment on the private hive I'm playing on... and that is after finding 5 major camps and a ton of vehicles.

I don't find it terribly hard to get NVGs at all , I guess it depends on where and how much you play the game .

It's pretty obvious to me why more people do not play night servers .

Don't try to kid yourself , people want to minimize thier risk of running into some one with a huge advantage like NVGs at night .

If someone says "Night" on the DayZ forums the thread will immediately turn into a discussion about night vision and thermal vision. Might as well throw my 2 cents.

Players without that gear adapt very well - they play on day servers. That's how it will be in the SA as well. Requiring batteries will not change anything because most likely you only need to occasionally switch it on for a few seconds to find and pursuit a player. Once you've seen someone you only need his direction, then you can turn it off and follow him for a while and then check again after a few seconds. A 10 min battery will last forever if used right.

To not be completely OT, I think it's important that you can use a flash light and a gun at the same time. If you suddenly need to use the weapon it's not feasible to go to gear menu, click "add to tool belt", open backpack, transfer hand gun and ammo and then reload.

I jumped on a cherno server last night, pissing down with rain and i could not see jack shit, all good , i like the night. Geared up at the balota tents then had to do the bolt to cherno proper to get some morph, spied some guy for a while in the shops torching around, let him go as he did not have an urban turban, nvgs or any weaponry. Ran into the centre of town, like i said it was pissing down that hardcore my screen was like ... 23ud15g.jpg ...

A nade popped out near me so i legged it back towards the church, shots broke out past me and i took a hit but made it around the corner to bandage then had to run inside the church and wait for my attacker who i thought would follow , sure enough a minute later this guy runs in , i was peeking around the corner every couple of seconds, nailed him and took his nvgs. Absolutely no chance i would have seen him in the rain and dark at even two feet. Next two guys i saw near the apartments both had nvgs,

Bring on the sa , flaring up Cherno and Elektro many many months ago was a cool and eerie thing. Of course it goes without saying that most having nightvision of some sort makes it hard to want to play a night server when you are so disadvantaged.

The main reason I stay away is that I have to walk at a snails pace just to use my flashlight. Fix that, and I'll play.

We've all had our fun in the dark. Some of it's probably better when you cant' see.

There should be a reason to play at night, most people seem to have accepted with that.

If hunting the wild beasties (pigs/rabbits etc. and in SA hopefully deer) was more of a nocturnal activity, it could go some way towards encouraging playing in pitch blackness.

I can't imagine there's one all-encompassing fix for the apparent unpopularity of the early AM, but I think a collection of little day/night differences like this could turn the tide of opinion.

As it is now, the only thing different in DayZs' world at night is, it's hard to see.
