Why side chat is great/Storytime

I just had one of the most fun time's i've ever had in DayZ,

So after rummaging through my home server camp a bit i log onto my favorite server to play on. It's a public hive sever with side chat, one of the few i've managed to find in my entire DayZ career.

Immediately i begin a conversation with the community:

[Muncywolverine]: any friendlies in elecktro?

[butterz]: ya i'm in elecktro

[Muncywolverine]: Wanna team up?

[butterz]: sure man

That simple. We swap steam names and get on VOIP.

After derping around elecktro a bit, coordinating our movements via voice, we find a damaged bus parked in-front of the church. We spend a while trying to gather parts to repair it, but can't find a crucial 2nd wheel. Butterz tells me he needs food, so we head over to the supermarket. I take up overwatch in the apartment complex, while he goes down and loots.

Then we hear the bus start up.

After freaking out over VOIP we rush out back to the bus, taking seperate paths. We spot the player, a survivor named Hackattack. I've got a perfect shot, but something stops me from taking it.

Then we hear m16/m4 rifle fire.

After freaking out over VOIP again i make a bee-line for the hospital roof, and Butterz hides in the Church. We try to contact Hack over side chat, and we ask him who shot at him.

[Muncywolverine]: HACK you scared the shit out of us, who was shooting at you?

[Hack]: no 1 lol

[Muncywolverne]: Man i got really close to killing you

[Hack]: thanks for not wasting me lol, i'm hiding in a bush

[Muncywolverine]: where are you now? i'm here with a buddy of mine

[Hack]: in a bush

[Muncywolverine]: what bush

[Hack]: behind the church

Ok, so i should be able to see this guy from ontop of the hospital, but i don't. It's getting dark, he's probably blending in with the foliage.

[Muncywolverine]:ok hey go into the church my buddy's in there

[Hack]: ok tell him not to shoot please

After my partner tells me Hack's in the church with him and "he's cool", start heading down the ladder.

"M16 RIFLE SHOTS"

(Butterz in voice): OH SHIT DUDE I JUST SAW HIM RUN BY

(Butterz in voice): HE'S IN THE CHURCH DUDE HE'S IN THE CHURCH

Butterz has died

As soon as i heard the gunshots i was in a dead sprint from the hospital to the church, desperate to save my new allies. I round the corner, pass the broken bus, and see the enemy. He's a bandit, in the back right corner of the church.

I unload with my AKM, completely miss with about half a clip, and switch to semi-auto. The bandit rushes to the other side of the church, his pistol drawn. He points at the ground and begins to shoot. I guess he thought one of his victims was still alive?

After a few more calmly aimed shots the bastard goes down, and i rush to where he was standing. He was probably trying to execute an unconcious survivor, i can't see who though, the bench is in the way.

I round the corner and see Hack. I was expecting him to be unconcious, and was ready to bandage him. Hack, however, was apparantly so panic'd or confused that he fired at me. The slug hit me dead in the chest, but didn't kill me.

I run around while typing "HACK HACK ITS ME I SAVED YOU DON'T SHOOT"

He stops and apologizes. After gathering our wits we hail Butterz over sidechat, and tell him to come pick up his stuff. Thankfully he has spawned back in elecktro.

The amount of friendlies I have a met with the side chat, and how many times I avoided killing and being killed due to the fact that I can communicate makes it all worth it.

I love side chat for these kind of interactions. One of the first things i do when logging into a new server is check for side chat. If none then i leave and find another. People are generally more friendly and the fights with bandits easier to find (bandit ambushes too = more tension).

I only use sidechat to communicate with admins and to talk to a person right after they've killed me. After that, it's back in the immersion.

I do think that you should be able to stop it from showing up on your screen for those that don't like it. I've been standing in the middle of a field before because i was talking to someone via side chat and got carried away (forgot where i was ingame) and then suddenly saw my screen and thought "fuck i need cover as i'm a sitting/standing duck!"
